1.6 8V broke a rod
« on: October 27, 2010, 06:47:28 AM »
Luckily didn't go through the block or do too much damage to the crank. Putting new pistons and rings, rod bearings, the one broken rod and all new gaskets. This is a 94 2wd Traker that I bought for my gf.

OK, which rod? and why did it break?
They don't just decide to break, it's usually another
problem or did you just get lucky?

If I had to guess I would say it's #1 and your oil pump failed OR
the stupid pressure relief valve got stuck open and you went low
on oil pressure, either way, don't rebuild without figuring out why
it broke, or history might just repeat

That's exactly why I installed a good oil pressure guage. Never trusted the idiot lites.

It was #1, looking at what was left of the old rod ,I found that it had been broken across the oil hole for a while(not a fresh break) just finally turned loose. I'm going back with a new oil pump and a oil pressure gauge just to be on the safe side. I think a previous owner may have been into the motor(RTV on oil pan..lack of timing belt cover).

Do you mean the small end of the rod broke? I can't
remember any other oil holes in the con rods

OK, it's been too long since I dug into a Zuki engine I guess.
So was the rod discolored or at all darker that the rest of the rod?
or did it just let loose???

No heat darkening at the break....guess the 163k miles did it in. And I have got an oil pump ordered before I finish the rebuild. Gotta get her Tracker right, gonna need my Dodge...getting to cold to be riding the Goldwing now.

Must of been a defect in the forging, I had 230K miles on my
engine when I rebuilt it with the turbo, never had that failure,
but I lost an oil pump that about destroyed the whole thing

Well I had to get a block....many thanks to Sean in Chesapeake. Thanksgiving guests helped pull the old one and came back Sunday to drop it back in. All is well now.

I've seen a few break rods, they all had cracked blocks. I wonder if the block distorts and siezes the piston.
