OK so a while back cel came on (91 tracker 1.6 8v) ......long story really short ran a jumper wire from b to c to check what code could come up # 24 which is (vehicle speed sensor)which means VSS faulty or broken speedo cable.Well speedo cable not broken is it possible that there is a sensor that the speedo hooks up to and that is faulty tired of lookin at that light on dash thx

The VSS is a reed switch on the back of the speedo head.

so i just buy another reed switch or do i just buy another speedo cable?

Usually the reed switch fails, they have a limited life expectancy.

Ya, reed switch, if you can find the right replacement, or if you
are feeling real adventurous you could convert it over to an all
electronic input like a reluctor  wheel or Can't think of the other
magnetic pickup type, brain tired tonight

ok will try auto parts store this weekend and see if i can get it fix thx guys

Thanks Rhino, I knew you could take up the slack for me, The auto parts store
isn't going to have that, you need an electronics store, like Digikey or some other
that has parts for sale, probably not RadioShack as most of them are just selling
electronics, not parts for electronics.

Now that I think about it, Hall Effect would be the best way to go, a reluctor wheel
is like what Ford is (or was, I'm not sure) using for their electronic distributorless
ignition systems, hall effect is what the electronic distributors use to trigger the
ignition spark

No a Ford cable won't work

if i dont fix this will it affect performance or anything cause i can just take the light out but would like too fix could i get a reed switch from another donor?if i knew what it looked like maybe ?
