Electronic Choke Weber replacing Water Choke...
« on: November 19, 2010, 10:16:06 PM »
Howdie,

I've recently bought an '86 Samurai and am currently replacing the engine with a rebuilt 1.3L (high comp. pistons, cam). When ordering up parts I thought it had an electronic choke on the stock carb. So, I bought a 38mm Weber "Outlaw" w/ electronic choke. Turns out the stock carb is a water choke. Is there any method to use the electronic choke carb, or do I need to return it (and get a 32/36, as the 38 apparently only comes either as mechanical or electronic choked).

Presently I just plan to wire the butterfly open (or remove it), if I can't figure a way to operate the choke.

I do have a small concern that, if I just wire-up/remove the choke plate, starting might be difficult at times, as it can get fairly cold here (Seattle area) during the winter months. But other than that, removing the choke plate doesn't bother me at all.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks,
--Bos

you should be able to make that work.
bypass the coolant hoses, of course, and it's a single wire hookup for the electric choke.
12v source that is switched with the ignition.
the electric chokes work ok. i prefer manual.
'89 kick w/little motor, still got pieces of jeff's pucks, stan's sticks into 4.24:1 tcase, 31x10.5x15's, rear lockrite, kick power steering, some radios(kj6esv), bmw seat, other changes just because. done on the cheap.
suzi the psychic gets me fishing.

I put the same carb on my 86, just tie the water lines together and find a wire that supplies juice only when the key is in the on position, I messed up at first and the hot wire I used was hot all the time and kept running down the battery :-[   Mike
