hey guys, i know someone who is selling some wagon wheels, there rusty, the white poweder coat is chipping off so i figured id buy em then sand blast them. has anyone does this?

Those are only like 100.00 new for the set of four, is it worth the hassel ? yes I have sand blasted them and it is not worth it to me, alot of work.

Of course if you want black wheels, they are more expensive, like $40 each. If you can pick them up under $50 for a set of four, go for it. If they are US Steel wheels, they are painted, not powder coated, and they scuff up and paint really nice...

On the other hand if they are old wheels, then they are built way stronger than the newer ones.  If they are from the 70s or 80s I would take the time.  My buddy picked up a set of 5 Jackman 5 spoke wheels for $100 at a swap meet, they were rusty and the paint was flaking off, so I took them sand blasted them and got them powder coated, all 5 for $100.  They look sweet!!

Don't forget if you get them powder coated then you can do it in any color.  

I bought CJ Wheels, I just sanded them with coarse sandpaper to get the rust off, then fine to get them smooth. I then painted them with tremclad rust paint. I preped 1 wheel a day on my lunch hour at work, than sprayed them on a weekend. About $12.00 is supplies and paint, 2 cans of paint and a multi pack of sandpaper.
I priced sandblasting, and most places wanted $30-$40 per wheel   I thought that was silly.

POWDER COATING RESISTS SANDBLASTING!!  If they really are powder coated, you'll have a hard time sandblasting it off.  Strip it first with aircraft stripper, then sandblast.

I paid $35 for mine, they came off a fullsize Bronco. Got one of those 3-M sanding wheels for a drill and some paint. They turned out fine. I have maybe $50 in them and they're just gonna get scratched up anyway (they already have ) so why waste $50 more to buy new?

Maine are the same as TN_Tracker's. They were white, I sprayed them with the primer that eats rust, 3 coats then painted gun metel. Going to paint the hard top gun metel soon.

Mine are like those too.  Paid $40 for all four, they were originally white but the fronts were painted over in silver.  Came off my friends old Bronco when they bought Classic II's.  I stripped them with aircraft stripper, took a few coats to get all the powdercoating off.  Primed them with self etching primer, painted with Krylon Rust Tough semi flat black, and cleared them with Clearcoat made for wheels (All rattle can).  They came out pretty nice, for the $$$ I have in them, I'm happy.  I say go for it.

ok, i ended trading the guy some fog lights for all four wheels, i wirewheeld them and painted them with rocker guard protectent stuff, it turned out good, ive only doen one coat im gonna do 2 more to each of them.
in total it costed me 38 bucks for these, 8 bucks for the paint stuff and i had the fog lamps from a garage sale and i paid 30 bucks for em, pretty good deal i think.

They look really good. Let us know how well the finish holds up.

The spare I keep on the roof of the ZJ was a old '80-ish Dodge wagon wheel. It keep dropping rust on the roof of the ZJ. I carried to a friend who does Rhino-Lining. Had him spray it for me. Didn't worry about lumps... it's my trail spare.

ill let ya know how it holds up i hope it works good ive got 4 coats on so its good and thick. i wont be mounting tires on them for a while, hopefully withtin the month
