« on: June 01, 2004, 05:31:59 AM »
Hello all, well here is the problem i wounder if anyone else had that or can share with me some info
When the engine revs and idles it has some vibrations which of course pass through the car it is very strong but sure something one can feel. the thing is that this problem is reccocuring itslike one day it happens and can last for a month and then goes away like nothing happened and the engine revs perfect .

thanks for your help/advice

Does this happen when the car is moving?  If so, it could be driveline or suspension.

If it's when the vehicle is stopped, then it narrows it down a bit;  broken motor mount, timing off, tune-up needed, vacuum leak, fuel injection problem.

Does it rev up well?  That is, does the engine seem to have power but just shakes?  That would sound like a mount or other balance problem.  Or, does the engine sputter and that's what is causing the shake?  That would be the tune-up etc. problem.

Just some thoughts.

Do, or have a compression check done when
it's shaking, also plugs and wires, sort of
sounds like a miss, or a plug wire bad/on
wrong or not tight,  Also is your fuel consumption
high when it's running rough ??

What's your cold idle, hot idle and N idle in RPMs?

it vibrates also when the car is not moving .the engine seem to have power but just shakes and i also dont think its a mount cause you can  actually hear the engine sounds diffrently.it looks like the fuel consumption is a little higher when running rough.and the cold idle is about 2000 and the hot is 900.
thanks all.

If needed, but he meant to check, or have the timing checked with a timing light. If it is off much it will cause rough performance.

You may also want to make sure the distributor is not loose (timing is changed by rotating the distributor).  With the engine off, see if you can rotate the distributor at all.  You shouldn't be able to.  If you can, you'll need to get a timing light, set the timing, and tighten down the distributor retaining bolt.

I have an 87 samurai, and i "had" a really bad rod knock in my engine, drove it till it blew. figure it was only running on two cylinders when i got it, but now only runs on one that is if i can get it started. All i have to say is, it was given to me by a mexican guy who said he was leaving, he signed the title over to me free and clear

Are you referring to the rotor or the housing?  The housing shouldn't move.  I'd have to check on the rotor, can't remember if it'll move, but it wouldn't suprise me, since it has a vacuum advance mechanism.

How about fouled plug, bad plug wire, cracked cap, damaged rotor?
