can you adjust the door catches/latches
« on: February 05, 2011, 04:32:00 PM »
I am having trouble searching the forums, dont know what the thingy is called.  I would like to adjust-if possible-how the doors shut and latch.  One I have to slam to make the door shut all the way, one works great. Is it a door latch/keeper/catch????  I am sure the answer is in the forums, I am just not searching the right terms cuz I aint sure what its called.

Thanks a ton.

striker might be the word your looking for. what are you working on? most of the time IMO the door latch will need replaced.

The striker is the piece on the door jamb (the body) and is usually adjustable - up/down, in/out - the lock is the piece on the door.  I've never had to replace either part.  There will also be handles, both inside & outside, those are usally made of plastic and break quite easily.

Since you say you have to slam the door - I would guess the striker needs to be moved outwards, but before I did that I would check the rubber door seal to make sure it's not preventing the door from closing properly.

Yes, the striker is adjustable.  Just loosen up the big screws and tap the striker with a hammer to move it and retighten the screws.
If this happens to be a samurai, check the body where the rubber door strap attaches.  A lot of times the body lip gets bent out a little bit, from the door being opened too "hard" (either by the wind catching it, or someone just "winging" the door open) and it will bend the lip behind the door strap (you can easily see it, if this is the case).  If it is bent, you can take a board and hammer and bend it back in, to keep the door from hitting on it so hard, and the door will close much easier then.
