Question for the California samurai owners
« on: February 09, 2011, 08:12:41 AM »
My better half has received a very lucrative offer from a company in souther Cali.

My question is this.....what can I do for my samurai?  I have no problem passing the smog checks here in Washington state, however I am more than a little nervous about the peoples republic of California.

I have an 8 valve 1.6 w/weber, cam, cat. convertor and flowmaster muffler.  Is it possible to get a historical plate and by-pass all the checks?  Or .........

What do you guys do?

Thanks

It will never be street legal in Ca. You could buy a whole new Sammy for what the Smog/DMV nazis would cost you. As for moving to Ca, as a born and raised, life long resident, I would recommend anywhere but here. I am leaving as soon as I can retire (4 yrs).

Maybe your wife can work at home online. My sister lives in Or. now but has lived in Ca, Ut, Id and Or with the same job.

Unfortunatly this is not an option.  Her position would require us to be there.  Upside is part of her family is down there.

The weber wont be smog legal here.  And if your cat is a bolt on type, it wont be legal here either.  They have to be welded on, guess they are worried about guys taking them off after smog inspections.

I seriously doubt you will get any kind of 'bypass' on the smog restrictions.  It really is a PITA.

The cat is welded.

Do they do anything for veh. that are 25+ years old?  Before all this smog stuff happened?

... It really is a PITA.

You'll need to have ALL the original emissions-related equipment in place and operating, in addition to passing measured emissions.  The cam could be a problem as well, as it will likely affect emissions measurements. Only the Thorley header has CARB exemption.

Petroworks has been successful in getting 1.6L engine transplants to pass a referee, but there is some expense involved. I believe one needs the same or newer year's engine, and then the emissions limits for that later year apply.

I think the cutoff-date for smog is fixed at around 1975.

Edit: The most compelling reason for keeping my Zuk registered & smog-legal (besides driving to the trails) is that those trails that I like to drive require street-legal registration.      I do a lot of camping and exploring in National Parks, where street-legal is required.

If you decide to make the move, sell your Sammy up there and buy a new one down here. Trust me unless you are so emotionally attached to that particular rig, you will be better off. The only smog exemptions that Ca makes is for 1973 and older cars. They are really strict on out of state vehicles. Even if you bought a brand new car in another state they would make you smog it before registering it ( I know this from recent experience) and it would have to have all of the Ca emission equipment and be inspected.

This is probably what will happen.  Or part it out and keep what I want and build another down there.  Or just get out of the whole suzuki thing altogether.

Have to wait and see what the duelling companies come up with for a final offer..............
