I got a quote from a muffler shop for
a 3" exhaust system with a 3" Cat the
whole thing installed for $300, the Cat
is $180 of that, not too bad but I'm going
to price a couple more shops and see
what they have to offer

i was talking to a guy about doing a custom exhaust for 3inch,  he told me it would be to big for a small engine like our zuks. He mentioned something about backpressure. If i were you i'd look into it more, do a posting up and ask others whats the biggest they got on their rigs.

Ya, I know back pressure is important, that's
why I haven't done it yet, but on a Turbo motor
back pressure is not needed, the turbo force feeds
the motor, and creates the back pressure needed
to build torque in the lower RPM range, after the
turbo, the less pressure the better, so 3" here we go.

I was talking to a guy at Car Craft in Riverside, 2000
+ cc VW engines turbocharged putting out 200+ HP
and 3" pipes right out of the turbo, I asked why and
he enlightend me to the HP that could be had by opening
up the exhaust system.

Yeah, 3" is a little large if your'e normally aspirated but Wild's running a turbo so it's a different ballgame.

Stu mentioned something about a stepped exhaust... going from 2" to 2.5" or something like that to increase low-end torque... does anyone have any more info on something like that? I plan on getting some exhaust stuff tomorrow or Sunday... I need to know what I should pick up.

If you have enough back pressure, then you
could open up the cat back to 2.5" and be OK,
but if it doesn't improve the performance, it's
just a waste of $$

So what's the ideal exhaust size for these things? 2"? 2.5"?

2" all the way out seems to be what
is offered on most systems, if I were
going to duplicate a system, I would
copy what has been done and proven
to work good, I think the biggest
difference in a good exhause system
is the header design.

I've heard some really nice things about the 2.5"ers, but I'm just going to the 'ol 2 cause I'm gonna stay (sigh) safe...

mine has the 2 inch pipe into 2.5 inch muffler one of the three chamber s.s. type, It seams to do the job with the 1.6 16 valve engine  8)  and sounds good too!
