Oil Pump
« on: March 01, 2011, 12:35:49 PM »
I'm changing the oil pump on my 86 Samurai 1.3, I bought a Beck/Arnley pump, there is a phillips head screw above and to the right of the crankshaft opening. The old pump doesn't have this screw, any ideas what it's there for?? It's screwed in real tight, I tried removing it but it will take some effort to do it.     Thanks

If I'm not mistaken - that screw anchors the bottom end of the timing belt tensioner spring.

Now you've got me wondering - the pump I have on the shelf has it, and I checked the FSM and it looked like that's where the spring went - maybe there's a early model and a late model pump - I'll check the parts catalogs in the morning.

Here's what I found - there are at least four different part numbers for the oil pump - '85, '86~88, '88.5~'89 & '90~95 - the '85 is the only one without the screw, and on the other three the screw is identified as - screw, tensioner spring.

Now, I don't know where the lower end of the timing belt tensioner spring hooks to on an '85, but on my engine, which is a '93, I'm pretty certain that screw is where it goes.

Thanks,Fordem   My spring was hooked on a screw that is into the block, but the screws are very similar in appearance. Makes since with the different years, my spring would be way to short to hook it down there. Thanks for the info.
