New to the Sammy World
« on: June 04, 2004, 02:48:40 AM »
Just want to take a few seconds to say HI.  I bought my first sammy a week ago.  1988 Samurai, 5" SOA setup.  31" tires.

My front axle is leaking from the felt gasket.  Do I have to take apart the entire hub, king pin etc to change it?  Thanks Pete

no its just 2 metal pieces. like 6 bolts i think? and the felt is right under those. you'll prolly have to scrape it off.  shouldn't take long at all.

yeap I was trying to tighten one the other night thinking that it was loose causing it to leak and I did that exact thing.  I had my torque wrench set to 20 FT LBS and it seared off.  Now comes the fun part of fishing it out of the hole.

Thanks Stu,
I thought about doing that but I didn't think that I could get enough surface on the seared off bolt to weld it.  I went last night to the Kingdom of Tools "Sears" and bought the smallest easy out that they had.  That's the one where you drill out the middle of the screw and tap the easy out in then turn it counter clock wise to unscrew it.    If I can find a small enough screw I may try welding first.

Thanks guys. Pete

yes you have to pull the whole knuckle apart :'( the felt just helps to push on the rubber seal to help it seal better, caliper hex 18-20 lbs spindle 29-43 lbs. wheel brng 96-132 inch lbs wheel brng nut 2inch, 43-65 lbs, king pin 15-22 lbs hub body 15-22 lbs hub cover 72-109 inch lbs,  hope that helps Dennis. 8)

no the hub is your locking hubs, you first take off the hub cover then the axel clip then the hub body, the felt bolts(joint seal bolts) 71-106 inch pounds. divide by 12 for foot pounds ;D Dennis.
