Help with timing tensioner
« on: June 03, 2004, 04:07:55 PM »
??? HI I am new to Zukies, I got a dead Tracker and have been rebuilding it for the last couple of weeks, but I am stuck. I can not figure out the set up for the timing belt tensioner. It came in pieces and the Haynes manual is worthless here, and I can't afford the $140 for the real book yet. Can anyone post a picture or describehow the thing fits. There are three pieces a long arm attached to a short arm tha has a slot in it and a spring that attaches to the short arm. It looks like the short arm is made to fit over a stud and pull/push the tensioner against the belt. The engine looks well engineered and it is surely simple but never having seen one I am lost and do not want to screw up a brand nes motor. The truck is a 1990 Tracker with a 1.6L 8 valve. Thanks in advanced for the help, the sooner it gets running the sooner I can start on a cage and suspension and tires and bumpers and a rack and.....

the stud is also a bolt to hold the outer plastic case on.
the belt is fitted with the timing marks set and timed against number four cylinder.
the stud has a rubber wheel onit and also a spring mechanism that tensions the belt.
i tend to tension by feel as done it a few times now. i do the belt every time i put a new water pump on or clear out behind the cover .

OK I know a pic is worth a thousand words, so I'll
try to make this a little shorter than that.

You have a wheel that tensions the belt, a long arm,
a short arm, a spring and a 10mm stud/bolt.

the long arm has a little tang that goes into the wheel,
you also need a bolt to go thru the wheel to hold it in
place, the long arm goes behind the tensioner wheel,
and sticks out to the right as you face the engine.

The short arm hooks into the long arm, and the spring
hooks to the end of it and to the block, the slot in the
short arm is for the bolt/stud to go thru to lock the tensioner.

The tensioner goes on first, line up the timing marks on the
crank pully and the cam sprocket, and slip on the belt, now
hook the spring up and put in the stud/bolt, do not over tighten !!
it's  a little bolt just snug by hand, be gentle the threads are
aluminum.

now tighten the tensioner wheel bolt and you should be done
with this part.

Good Luck
