Started my new bumper
« on: June 01, 2004, 02:10:12 PM »
Well, my friend and I finally got started on my new bumper. Using his metal-working skills and some scrap square stock we came up with this as a starting point:

While he was busy welding, I snuck over and grabbed one of his brither's new Interco 285/75/16 Truxus tires for size comparison:

Well, here's the main bumper part. There's more to be added, but we ran out of steam for the night:

Coming next time we work on it will be the winch mount, upper hoop and skid plates. I'm really happy with how this is turning out and if it wasn't for my friend's skill and willingness to do this, I would never had gone the custom fab route. So far the material has been basically free, it's just cost plenty of labor. What do you guys think?
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

Looks good! I would skin it with some sheet metal or d-plate to give it a clean finished look. Good work.

Looks great.

You're mounting the winch almost exactly like I plan on doing when funds allow it. :)

Hmmm... all I would need would be 4 16" rims, 5x5.5 bolt pattern and 3" backspacing and either some kind of lift or a LOT of trimming! LOL!

That is exactly how I went from 29's to 33's. An innocent comparison of some 33's of a CJ and out came the saw, grinder, welder, etc.... ;D
Your bumper is looking good. Keep us updated. 8)

Check the Suzuki side of the Vitara model (Tracker has 15"). -7's rims are 16", but do not know the bs. I think I have info in my webshots on the aluminum rims. I'd go with steels anyways.

Forgot to add, got a place to place a tug strap or a winch hook as close to the frame as possible?

Make sure you want to keep it high and un-protected so that the cable/strap won't get kinked/knicked. GM has a set of large hooks which would work nice. They mount on a flat plane, yet are raised/lowered on the same horizontal plane.
