Calmini 3in susp lift shocks and struts
« on: March 11, 2011, 04:14:53 PM »
Alright im finally getting around to installing my lift on my 89 sidekick. Problem is the shocks and struts that came with the lift are shot. How do i know what size of shock and strut do i need to get? Are the stock struts the same size since there is a spacer? May need to use them till i can afford a new set. Any info on sizes, brand, and place to get them will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Dub

The stuff that comes with the Calimini kit is nothing special, just regular off the shelf Monroe standard size struts and a standard set of Crown Vic or Mustang shocks will work in the back. You can get replacements at any auto parts store relatively cheap.
The usual stuff, and 2nd generation Air to liquid intercooled TURBOCHARGER

Is the strut with the lift the same size as the stock strut?

I keep hearing about the ome struts without the spacer but with the top mount flipped. Is the best route? If i go with monroe or another brand will i still need spacer or need to flip the mount?

so far no one has produced a long travel or extended strut. and as far as im concerned the one with the calmini kit is too short if it allows the strut to bottom out and does not come close to full compression. ??? seems like a no brainier to me. I dont know how much drop the "flipped" mount yields but if its more than the calmini spacer I would flip 'em, then bolt the calmini ones inside the engine compartment on top of the spacers to use as towers for a strut brace. ;)

If you use the calmini spacers save yourself some frustration and get limiting straps.

Im going to slowly add weight to the front bumper to see if that will help without over doing it as I hear there is a sag issue as the lift gets older. Im  thinking trail tough tube bumper and a winch. I'm hoping the tube bumper is a bit lighter than the larger ones out there.  Wow what a Finicky lift. ???

Is it true that the OME struts are 1 1/2" longer than the stock struts. If so would a 2" strut spacer and the OME struts work?
Because this guy sells the strut spacers separately. This would give a 1/2" more or would that damage your CV's as well?

They are longer but I'm not sure if it's exactly 1.5" or more. I'm using OME struts with about 3.75" of front suspension lift with Jeff's strut spacers at 2" and they seem to work fine, but DO make up some limiting straps and in the long run you'll save your struts. ( and CV's) And no, as of right now no one I know is making limiting strap " kits. " We all made our own in various ways. Here's a good opportunity all you fab guys, limiting strap bolt on kit. Or Limiting strap on.  :P
