Please help...! (94 swift DOHC GT in a samurai)
« on: April 06, 2011, 10:44:46 AM »
I recently have bought a 87 samurai with a 94 swift dohc gt engine in it. I was driving and all of a sudden i put my foot to the floor and it would bog right down. Prior to this the fuel pump was getting fairly noisey. I suspected it was either the fuel pump or the fuel filter. I replaced the inline fuel pump (airtex E8000) with an equivelant (carter P70199) inline pump, also a new filter. It is now worse off than before, it barelly even idles and bogs down when you give it throttle unless you go really easy on it, then it will rev up to about 4000rpm then bog right down. Can anyone tell me what i should look at next? Could it be a sensor? Where is the diagnostic computer port on these things? oh and the catalytic converter is making a pinging noise to now when you rev it up and let off the throttle.

Diagnostic computer port??

First - not all of the Swifts had a functional diagnostic port, a number of them had a 12 pin ALDL port under the steering wheel, and there was no connection to the ECU - but - even if the donor your engine came from had such a port (working or not), who knows if it made it into the new harness?

A 94 Swift would have had a connector under the hood into which a paperclip could be inserted and that would make the check engine light flash a failure codes - again - who knows if it made into the new harness?

A good place to start would be - what ECU are you running in this swap - do you have the original Swift ECU or an after-market one?  Do you have an ECU at all (is it still EFI or carburetted)?  Is there a check engine light, does it turn on when you turn the ignition on and go off after the engine starts?

I hate to say this, but it sounds like you're in a bit of a pickle.

If it's fuel injected, there is a 99% probability it's electronic fuel injection and there is an ECU somewhere - and until we know which one and how it was wired, we're just guessing.

There is a possibility the Swift ECU was used - I think that would be the least expensive way to swap the GTI engine in and keep the fuel injection - unfortunately it is not the only way it could have been done.

Is there any possibility you could get hold of the person who did the swap and ask a few questions ...

a) which ECU was used and where it's mounted
b) did he connect the check engine light
c) did he connect the underhood diagnostic connector

this last item is not the port you would connect a scanner to, but rather a 4 pin connector that you insert a paper clip into to get the ECU to flash the codes on the check engine light.

Check the catalytic convertor it sounds like it may be plugged. two easy ways to test it are

1 install a vacuum guage should have around 17" of vac at idle-then test at 2000 rpm should be near the same if it has very little vac that is a sign the cat is clogged[ could also be other problems so try #2 to verify].

2 remove the O2 sensor and run it[will sound bad] if it runs better[at least somewhat] the cat is probably clogged

I agree with CAMISAMI, it sounds like a plugged cat.
