Anyone messed with a chip in a 96 tracker?I see them advertised on this site "for as low as"69$.Looking for better mileage and a little pep.I know the 6 position on my super duty works well, just looking for opinions. My tracker doesnt seem to get very good mileage so loking to improve on that.

The Fleabay chips can actually cause damage to the motor by inducing an overly LEAN condition "to save on fuel". Remember, if it sounds to good to be true, then, odds are, it is. A good chip is usually around $100 or better and it is something that information needs to be programmed into, not just a "run&gun" thing. Even the "Superchip" company will tell you that you still need to re-tune the engine after installing their chip, and they are one of the oldest out there.

I agree 100000000 percent with eveyone else's post!

This "Chip" is NOT a re-mapped ECU system and there is NO SUCH THING as a remapped ECU chip available commercially for the 1.3 or 1.6 Suzuki engines!

The BEST best way to get better mileage out of your engine is a thorough tuneup or, if necessary, an engine rebuild/exhaust replacement/fuel/air mixture system rebuild.

Anything else is a scamoid waste of money!

check for cracks on the exhaust manifold too. they can cause the o2 sensor to read lean and over-fuel your motor.

The problem is not a matter of "who can reprogram...?" but rather "Do you have enough money to pay for the reprogram?"

It is a matter of economy of scale.

There are far more LS1 engines (and people out there willing to fork over the money) out there than there are Suzuki owners with a similar desire for their G-series engine.  This is doubly-true for a ECM whose technology is - at best - sixteen years old.  Okay, maybe 10 years or so if you count the last of the 1.6 16-valve Trackers/Vitaras...

So, how big is your wallet?  Most Zukers are happy to have made the inexpensive choice with their offroad vehicle purchase...

If it is that important to you there is an option of a aftermarket standalone system. that is what i am doing for the Audi motor in my sidekick. do a search for "mega squirt" on this forum. that would be the best option that I know of for a zuk. but in this day-and-age there is somebody that can do what you desire.
but as ack said it will not be cheap. a motor swap might be more economical choice. (if your after more power)

#1 I bought the tracker for a run around vehicle not a offroad toy at this time.My 7.3 powerstroke gets about 17mpg "if" I stay out of the throttle. My tracker seems to get about 20-21 range so this is why I'm looking for a little more power/poss program.I am not looking to do motor swaps or turbos at this time. The tracker already has a k/n cone filter, larger exhaust, new fuel pump and filter,no cat.I'm not rich or have a large pocket book.Maybe this was the wrong forum to ask questions.

I hope you don't feel attacked or belittled. That was not the intent by anybody there's just not a good answer for this problem. Alot of us always think to the extreme. And I seem to have a gift for conveying info in a way that people get defensive or pissy. An unintentional quirk of my composition I guess. ;)

If you do find a solution for this issue please share.

Timo, I think that the biggest reason that so many on this and other boards go for an engine swap or power adder verses ECU upgrades on these things is like was stated about the $$$ it would take to "improve" the factory ECU, since nobody offers support for it.  It reads like you have pretty much maxed out what you can do to the engine/ecu allready from the items that you have. Nobody was after you about what you are wanting to do. Please don't take it that way.

The 96 Tracker isn't an easy ECU to modify, it has a fairly under specced Hitachi 8-bit processor and is usually code protected. The 8V models are easier to play with, some of the later models have reprogrammable EPROM ECUs although earlier models require a daughterboard from someone like GRID. Unfortunately Suzuki fitted the best ECUs to the Swift and Baleno/Esteem models. They had 16-bit dual core processors and many of them were reprogrammable, either from having an EPROM (96 models) or through EEPROM memory internal to the proceesor. My Vit runs modified fuelling and timing maps and extended (OBD1) diagnostics. Next step is to integrate a WBO2 sensor and then add a bootloader to enable reflashing down the serial link.
