samuri with webber 32/36 dgav carbs
« on: May 14, 2011, 04:06:35 PM »
hello to all you samuri worriers out there
i'm trying to find out info for my mate who lives in santa fe in america and he has just fitted an up rated engine and  a webber 32/36 dgav carb to his samuri and he tells me the car starts fine idles fine and will rev up without problems
the problem he is having is the car will not pull more than about 30 mph and he is stumped as to why this is happening
he thinks he has fitted vacum pipe and blanking plugs in the correct places and has fitted a fuel pump regulator set to about 3psi the plugs are very sooty and it is doing about 10mpg and feels like its either not getting enough fuel or to much fuel when he puts his foot an the accelerator pedal to pick up speed he also mentioned that santa fe is about 7000 feet above sea level and was wondering if this has any effect on the running of the car
if anyone has vasts amount of knoledge on fitting and setting up these carbs i will pass on all replies for him to try

Follow the direction in the setup paperwork for the Weber Carb.

Be sure the proper VAC connections are in use.  Ck the WEBER paperwork.  Check the WEBER website for numerous setup images.

The timing advance nipple is displayed very clearly in the WEBER paperwork.  directly under water spool, pointing at passenger side fender.  Make sure the lines are not cracked.  Pinch one end and blow in the other.  If it leaks w/ <10 lb of pos pressure, it can't be trusted w/ 20 lb of VAC.

Ensure the timing is set correctly with a quality light.  Start w/ 10BTDC. SET THE TIMING AT A LOW IDLE.  You do NOT want the dist. advancing while you're indexing your distributor.

The screw on the bottom of the carb that points at the battery is the low idle.  Closing that needle (clockwise) will reduce your fuel expense and take some of the black off of the plugs, IF the timing is right, AND IF you don't have a ring problem.
Can you smell fuel in the exhaust?  If the rig is smoking, is it OIL?  or is it FUEL?

*** Running too lean will burn valves, burst coolant hoses, overheat exhaust headers, igniite off-road debris, etc.

PS:  My WEBER 32/36 runs FANTASTIC!!!  I wish I'd upgraded when I first heard of them.

Good suggestions Gunsmoak,
First, is this a New In Box Weber, or a swap meet special?
Again, without seeing the vehicle, diagnostics are tough!!
Could be a plugged Cat.
What did you do for the Air Intake?  Stock air plumbing or K/N filter kit offered?
Do You Have WOT? (is the throttle cable adjusted correctly)
Is the base adapter sealing/ installed correctly?
Is the choke "Pulling Off" correctly?
Check at Idle vacuum with gauge if you have one for leaks.

2 things come to mind---

first make sure there is no intake leak, especially around the manifold adapter.
things get warped by over tightening.

instructions from weber are good.
probably needs idle, main, and air correction jet(s) changed.

basic setup is mix screw out 2 turns out from seat, idle screw in 1 1/2 turns from fully closed(choke off).
adjust mix screw to best idle.. counting turns.
less than 2 turns indicates reducing idle jet size, more than 2 turns suggests increase jet size.
once idle is ok start with mains. sounds like you need to reduce sizes. should be somewhere around a 140(both)?
increasing air correction jet sizes will also lean it out.
a jet pack would be handy.
the weber set up would be good to read- should be online somewhere.
just some thoughts.......
