Tire size for 8.5 rim
« on: June 06, 2011, 05:20:57 AM »
I am looking at a set of Ford F150 aftermarket rims that are 15x8.5 and am wondering if 235/75 r15's would still fit on these or if I would have to go bigger.  I am running a 91 tracker 2 door with a 2' syspension lift.

Ya, they will fit, but that is a bit wide for a 235, it would be better it you
don't have tires already to go to a 30" or a 31" but the power factor is
also something to keep in mind, there is no point to getting wider wheels
and then bigger tires just to make the truck no fun to drive.

One thing to keep in mind is the back spacing, the OEM back space was
far, most of the wheel is behind the wheel mount surface, just changing
that by 2 or 3 inches and another 2 or 3 inches of rim width will make the
stance wider, and the tires stick out more, check your local tire laws and also
how strict the local law enforcement is about it, most will allow a little tire to
stick out, but not more than an inch, so you may also need some fender flairs
and mud flaps if you have to pass a safety inspection like they have in Utah

I run an 8" rim with 2.5" back space, and a 33-13.5 Swamper, they stick out
but I have never been harassed by law enforcement about it, your experience
may vary

If I were gettitng rims for 235 tires, I would get a 7" with a 3.5 back space,
they are about $50 new from 4WheelParts in the Rock Crawler round or D
hole style, but if you are looking for alloy wheels you may want to shop elsewhere
or use the stock rims, they work with 235, I used mine that way for years

Good Luck

They fit, but barely. Your putting a 9.25 inch tire on a 8.5 inch wheel. Doesn't give you a lot of protection from rocks or ability to air down if you ever need it. Also only a few shops around me will mount a tire on a wheel that is outside of manufacturers recommended sizes, so that maybe something you would have to deal with too.

You need to check the center hole on the Ford rim too. I have Ford Outlaw II's  on my Vitara. In order to make them fit I had to put them on a Bridgeport Mill and enlarge the hole diameter to 4.25. I can also tell you that they will just squeek by the rotors without wheel spacers. I have Big O Mudd XT's that are 235 x 15 but I can't remember the width. I gave the Vitara to my daughter and only see it when the oil needs changed. They are either 8.0 or 8.5 though. If I get a chance I will check and let you know.

Thanks for all the info.  The guy emailed me back and told me the hole in the middle was 3.5" and the backspacing was 4.25".  Looks like these are more trouble than they are worth, you guys saved me making a wrong purchase.

tuxblacray, you gave me a real good idea of how they would look because the ones I am looking at are the same rims.

Freddy D,

Don't be discouraged from the rim purchase if you can buy them right. I gave $75.00 for mine and they are in great shape. Any machine shop with a mill can turn the centers to 4.25 for you. If you do alot of off roading the rotors will be spots to watch because with the limites clearance this area will get packed with mud easily. If your rock crawling you s/b okay.

You should'nt have any fenderwheel rub from the front wheels with your lift. I put on a set of Jeff's wheel spacers after this picture was taken. It gave me an 1" or so overall lift and everthing rides and looks better.

Hope this helps you some.
