calmini high steer.
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:19:36 AM »
Has any one used a calmini dual high steer on a samurai ?  (part number SS1584) it says you have to use wheel spacers or 2.5 back spacing. how does it affect your ackerman? (spell check) thinking about buying one ! Thanks'.

I'm a big fan of the Sky Manufacturing kit myself.  I run the single overhead arm, been happy with it and don't have any issues with bump steer with a standard SPOA.  But the Calmini kit is going to be quality as well, so you can't really go wrong with either company.

What size lift are you running?  Each kit is designed for an approximate size, so the size of lift is important in making sure the geometry is correct.

And you spelled ackerman right, but I did have to look up what it meant.  :D  Most kits keep the same angles as stock, so the steering should be close to the same and stop to much tire scrub.

well I called sky last week and they were two weeks out on theirs, I found a like new calmini 14 miles from here about half price so I might take a chance, the sammie I'm working on has a 12" lift but I'm putting on six pack yj's with missing links to lower it down some, I have a drop pitman for the stock box if I have to but will end up going to a side kick box, the tire scrub might be corrected on the c.m. kit because the tie rod has moved holes so not sure if for the better or for the worse, LOL.

Well I picked it up! Man this setup is heavy, did not know it was going to weight so much but at least it should not break.

I ran the CALMINI Hi-Steer on my Samurai with SPOA, 1.5" springs and 2" shackle reverse (netted about 9.5" over stock) with no issues.  Ran 33" Swampers on the street and it tracked straight as an arrow.  It felt really close to factory.  The Samurai had the stock pitman arm on the Sidekick box also.

ok thank's, I think the one I picked up has the stock samurai tie rod end, I will have to source a tre for the side kick box in the future, I'm thinking it might be off of a ford courier?  I tried doing a search for them on the web to see how the calmini setup was but could not find too much on them. mine is cad plated Gold but I will end up painting it Black to keep it from standing out too much!

i drilled and sleeved the frame i did it all with out a kit the shaft between the colum and the box has to be modified you need the staft from the trackick     take the samurai shaft ubolt the rag joint cut the rag joint flange off  now cut the box end joint off the trackick shaft drill hole left from the cut out to i think it was 7/8" the samurai will slide right in and just weld it up all done
It takes longer to mount the pump then the box and mod the shaft

OK I'm kinda getting what you said, one of my Sammie's they bolted one hole that matched on the Box, the other two they just drilled holes in the frame no pipe ! Did you run the pipe all the way through the frame or butt it on the inside on one side?I will try to see how and what they welded for the steering !

Thanks'
