Novice question
« on: June 08, 2011, 08:52:13 PM »
Ok, I have a completely novice question.  I've got a 88 1/2 samurai I'm building up a little.  I noticed the drivers side front wheel had way too much play and it looked like both sides have been leaking for some time.  So I decided to order the complete rebuild kit from lowrangeoffroad.  Now comes the stupid portion of my rebuild.  While disassembling the knuckles I noticed there are no greese fittings and there seemed to be quite a bit more greese than just whats required to pack the bearings.   Do I need to just "dollop" some extra greese inside or am I just seeing whats extra from packing the bearings?

Yes.
The way I do it, is just put a light coating of grease on the inside of the "bell" on the end of the axle, and also on the inside of the knuckle (to keep anything from rusting, if any water would get in there, or if it would draw moisture somehow).  I also put a light coating on the outside of the axle "bell", so the knuckle seal isn't sliding against a dry surface.  Then I build up a little "dam" of grease around the upper and lower kingpin bearings and also put a pretty good coating on the outside of the axle seal in the end of the axle housing.  I do not pack the whole knuckle full of grease....I don't find that it is beneficial and it wastes a lot of grease.
