Several months ago (late last summer) I started to work on my 1986 samurai and the engine would run great for a little bit and then the rpm's would start to drop when ever I put throttle. It would idle okay but would drop down, I replaced the distributor cap in October and that seemed to fix the problem, it was really corroded on the inside, but now since it is getting hot again it has started to do the crazy rpm dance of death. Once I get it past 2,000 I can hold it in the high rpm range (4,000) but that still makes it impossible to drive daily. Anyone know what it could be? I have driven it for a month or so without any major trouble so could the heat be getting to it? Does something need to be done to the carberator?

Might be worth spending $8 for a can of carb cleaner to spray in it and a bottle of cleaner to run through your tank. Maybe you will get lucky and it's just some gunk in your carb.

Check all of your vacuum lines.  The stock carb is really sensitive to air leaks and can cause interesting issues.

Have you done the upgrade for the venturi tube? I have heard that this will solve those problems!!

I second the Venturi Tube. If you haven't got that on your rig try it first and see what happens.

Check around the base of the carb for vacuum leaks. 

Heres what you do in order.....

1. Check for vacumm leaks, use spray to check all the lines

2. Spray carb while its running, and go fill up your tank run lucas cleaner in it

3. Put a new venturi tube in it
