Oil leak...
« on: May 24, 2004, 02:09:48 PM »
All that have read my previous posts know what a dumbass I am at troubleshooting so... I think I have a engine oil leak but I'm not sure how serious it is. There's not a pool of oil on the driveway or anything, but the Sidekick seems to go through a litre of oil pretty quick! Where I park there is a small dark patch where the engine would sit above. Someone told me (sorry if I say this wrong!) that my front and rear engine seals are leaking? What the hell does that mean? Am I in trouble here? If the seals or what ever are crap, I will replace them, but I'm not sure how to or how much it'll cost me. Should I take my Kick in to a shop and get someone else to do it?? Once again... helpless as a baby :'(

The front seals will be fairly inexpensive to replace, the rear will be more expensive though ( have to remove the tranny). The seals I think they are talking about is the Cam and crank seals. Unless it's leaking real bad it should not cause you any 'problems' as long as you keep your oil level correct. It could eventually get oil on the clutch plates, timing belt ect... and cause problems. I ran ming a long time leaking, but eventually they got bad enough that I had them replaced.

How quick?
How much oil do you use, and over how many miles?
Also, how many miles do you have on your engine?

If you normally express yourself in KM, please substitute KM for miles in the above questions.

For instance:  (OK, I see you're in Alberta) - do you get 2,000 KM to a Litre of oil?

I'd say about 2000 miles. I've been watching the levels like a hawk (because the guy I bought my Kick from was using TERRIBLE engine and transmission oil. I don't think he knew what he was doing.) I don't think I know what I'm doing but I flushed the Type F fluid for the Dex3 and there was a big difference because I was losing that fluid as well. Thanks to everyone on the board, I'm picking up things rather quickly now and working on my Kick is even more fun now!

So last question then: What kind of mechanic should I look for when wanting to replace those rear engine seals???

He was using type F auto trans fluid !!!
Ahh, that stuff is for old Fords, and it
foams up inside, no wonder you were
losing fluid. Geez some people don't
