Electric Fan Update
« on: May 22, 2004, 11:09:17 AM »
Well, all in all, I'm pleased with my electric fan install.  The install went pretty smoothly.  The fan is controlled by a toggle switch on the dash and a mechanical thermostat mounted near the radiator's return hose.

The little 12" (supposedly from a Daewoo) fan has plenty of cooling power.  I was stuck in a traffic jam on the interstate (3 miles in 45 minutes) with the A/C on in approximately 90 degrees and it kept the temp right at the thermostat mark.  The temp will increase to a little over half but when the fan comes on, it cools right down.

I can't say that I've noticed any power increase and MPG seems unchanged, but, I just "feel better" knowing I'm not turning the clutch fan when the engine doesn't need it.

thats great!  what do you think about the drain on the motor when it needs more el. when the fan comes on?  i like mine too, not noticed mpg or power gain either.  i have mine set to kick on at a lil over 1/3 on guage, think that is to low?  that is the normal running temp of my g/f 93 automatic...

I don't even notice when it comes on.  Whenever there's additional electrical load on my Tracker, like the lights or the A/C, I'll get that annoying tapping noise from under the hood.  First I thought it was a bad alternator, then maybe the fuel injector, but I thought someone here said it was some other electrical switch/device that kicked in under load.  Anyway, I don't get that tapping noise when the electric fan is on, so I don't think the load can be heavy at all.

I tried to set mine to come on as little as possible, so it comes on just over 1/2 on the temp gauge.  Then it cools it right down to about 1/4 which is where the engine thermostat opens (it'll never get below there).

Every now and then, I turn the cut off switch to OFF to see how well the cooling system can handle the heat.  It's amazing, as long as I'm moving the system stays cool.  It's only when idling in gear for a good while (10 or 15 minutes) that the temp will start to rise.  Then if I start moving (or turn the fan on) the temp drops right back down.

Even without any power or MPG increase, I'm happy with the electric fan.  Glad to hear you are too.  You used the "ZIP" tie mounting for yours, right?  How do y ou like that?  I made a big bracket for mine that goes diagonally from the passenger's-lower shroud mount to the driver's-upper shroud bolt.  Not exactly stock looking, but I think it'll work.

I used about two inches of heater hose, split and inserted over the shroud edge, on the four corners of the new fan shroud to protect the radiator fins.

I pulled power directly from the battery positive to the relay (mounted on the hood latch).

I was/am a little concerned about the thermostat control being so close to the radiator.  I didn't read anything that said it shouldn't be.  Hopefully, it won't be too hot for it there.  I liked mounting the thermostat control and bar on the new shroud.

There's plenty of room on that firewall to come through with new wires.  Guess I'll fill the rest of the space with caulk in case I ever get water splashing up there.

I would have liked to have bolted the fan to the new support bar, but for right now it's in there snug.

I probably spent about 5 hours putting this together, which means it'd probably take the average person less than 3 ::)
