86 Samurai starts but stalls after few seconds. Help!
« on: July 28, 2011, 01:43:04 AM »
Hello i have a 1986 suzuki samurai, about a year and a half ago I pulled the engine to do do the 4.3 vortec swap. Unfortunately it never happened. The stock sammy engine was sitting on a hoist under a tarp in a shop. I ended up not doing the swap so l put the stock engine back in. We never did anything to the engine after it was pulled out.
We drained the gas out of the tank but not the lines or float bowl, changed the oil, and new coolant.  Once it was time to start it wouldnt start for more than a couple seconds. I assumed it was bad gas left in the line and carb. I continued to try and start it. It would start run for a few seconds and shut off. I changed the fuel filter and flushed the lines with a line pump. I flushed the fuel pump by hand. There were some little particulets in the fuel that i pulled out.i figured that would be in the carb so i got a factory service manual off of suzukiinfo.com. i was able the get the top of the carb broken down. I took the air horn off and cleaned the float bowl, needle valve, I adjusted the float it was out of spec. The float bowl was kinda dirty. But not bad. I noticed the needle valve did not have a filter so im probably going to get a rebuilt kit to get a new needle valve and filter. I put the air horn back on and no change still starts for a couple seconds then dies. If you hold the choke closed and prevent the choke piston from opening the choke it will run pretty stable but as soon as you let go it dies. I have a feeling its running was too lean or might have an extreme vacuum leak. Due to holding the choke closed and restricting the air flow to allow the small amount to fuel to mix with now small amount of air but i could be wrong. I did notice on the front of the carb there is a window that allows you the see the fuel in the float bowl. The fuel should he in the middle of the window between the two marking left to right. Its empty when you start it and if i keep it running by closing off the choke it will fill up and empty and fluctuate but not stay consistant.
I have a vaccum diagram and everything looks like its connected correctly. I checked the outlet from fuel pump and it seems to be working just fine. i dont have a gauge so i cant check pressure but it comes out pretty vigirously. and it s I can always get a new aftermarket carb but im going to do the V6 swap eventually and i dont want to put alot of money into this engine, but i at least want to drive it while im getting things ready for the swap.
Please if anyone can help i would appreciate it. Any information is better than  no information. I hope i gave enough info lol sorry if i over did it. You cant have proper diagnosis without prior testing information. Thanks for your help.

i think you are going to have to pull a few more parts off of it and put some seafoam in it and maybe tap the body a few times with the handle of a screwdriver to break loose a stuck ball bearing if one is rusted under one of the solenoids, maybe run a small propane torch (un lit) to the top and run it with that while you look for fuel flowing inside.

Sounds like old fuel that turned to amber in the jets or in the carb, happens
from fuel left in the float bowl, but carb cleaner sprayed into the float bowl
might eat through the old amber and help it run better, leave the stuff over
night, I've seen it happen before with just gasoline sitting over night
