Tire size
« on: August 16, 2011, 09:27:11 PM »
Good Day I am a newbie in 4x4. I have a 1990 Suzuki Escudo A/T 16V engine. I have already lifted it to 3inches. According to the research that I made I'm running with 4.62 gear ratio and I want to replace the the tires to 32 inches is this possible or do i need to re gear even if ill be using it on trail 2x a month and mostly on road because this is my everyday car. Need your expert inputs. Thank you!

I would recommend going to lower gears if possible, a set of 5.12 gears from a manual transmission car should be a direct swap.

1990 Suzuki Escudo A/T 16V engine.  ...  [increase] the tires to 32 inches ...do i need to re gear.

It is generally accepted that if you increase the tire diameter by X%, you should also increase the R&P ratio by the same percentage.  Stock gearing may accommodate small changes, but as best I can figure, your OEM tires were around 27".  Going to 32's looks like a very large (+18%) change to me.

Edit: Drone's makes a very good point (below). I'm a Samurai guy, and don't know anything about 'Kicks/Escudos, but I've also seen references to:
 the '89 1.3L Sidekick R&P which is 5.62  and
 the '92 4-door R&P which is 5.32

either of which would be lower (higher numerically) than the (manual) 5.12:1, if you can find 'em. You'd need both the rear and front.

Yea, he gains about 10% back from the drop in gear ratio.  Not perfect but a lot better then stock.

Now i know thanks for the info. How about 30 or 31 is this possible with my current gearing because its very hard for me to find 5.12 here in the my place. Thank you!
