The 4x4 fever
« on: September 06, 2011, 06:24:19 AM »
Like most things i get involved with... i eat, drink, and sleep it until i get bored with it or a better project comes around!

After my front end fell in a deep hole at Saturdays mud bog, I am craving more lift!  My rig already had Calmini 3" lift springs (spring under) when I bought it.  I would rather have had SPOA and factory springs.  With 31" tires I have about 6" of wheel well clearance.  When I look at a side-by-side next to my rig, they are about the same height heh.

So anyway, I had a heavy duty set of U-bolts waiting to swap out my dinky partially stripped out pieces.  Last night I got the notion to flip my springs and see how things looked.  Already had the perches installed and OTT 2 kit.  Basically just a matter of doing the flip. Now I have 12.5" of wheel well clearance and somewhere in the 7-8" lift range (from 3).  EEK... now i need bigger tires to fill the gaps!

So obviously I have a pretty hard driveline angle, esp. up front.  With no spacers on the front driveshaft, there is only about a 1" overlap.  I am thinking I can lower my transfer case (as discussed breifly before) pretty easily.  I just need to get things loose and lowered and see how low I can get it without binding up the 4wd sticks "throw".  Depending on how low I want it to sit, I will probably build some bracing/trusses of some sort to keep the case safe.

On another note, I pulled a Garret turbo from a late 90's Saab yesterday.  It may be a T2, no shaft play, and its water cooled.  I haven't looked at it twice since I pulled it.

Any comments?

It sounds like it is way too high.
35 years of Samurai ownership, and I still have my very first one. :)

Do you use this for mud or rock crawling?  The only issue I have with dropping your t-case is your lowering your ground clearance, and negating that lift.

What size tires are you looking to run?
96 Geo Tracker, x-SJ-410,  x-White Rabbit, x-Project Trouble
Crawlers NorthWest
x-Trouble Racing

Good point on losing clearance. Nothings in stone. I dont wanna blow through u joints with hard angles.  We do mostly mud and woods riding. No rocks, just climbing sand hills if any.

And a typo, we went from 6.5" to 11" on wheel wells. 33" bfg mud tires from 31 tsl shouldnt work axles too much more. These tsls are meat cleavers and super heavy. 35" would possibly look better but I dont want to kill axles. We have auto lockers front and back, stock ratios.
