Linkage?
« on: September 10, 2011, 12:01:28 PM »
With my Sidekick 5 spd I often have trouble getting into
1st gear at a stop. Usually I slip it into 2nd to get a roll
going, and then into 1st solves it.

Not a bit of other issues with tranny.

Is this a linkage issue?

Thanks

If you consider the clutch a linkage - then maybe.

It's a symptom of what is commonly called "clutch drag" - if for any reason the clutch does not disengage completely, the transmission input shaft continues to rotate, and first is difficult to select.

Some of the causes are - an improperly adjusted clutch, a defective or contaminated clutch, defective throw out or pilot shaft bearings.

If it was a clutch issue you also would have issues with getting into reverse, if you have no issues with reverse then I would look at synchroes.

Thanks. And yes it is a bit more difficult in reverse as well.

I also see that the clutch does not disengage until the pedal
is way down. Much further down than I need to do with my
old Ranger.

So I am hoping if I adjust the clutch pedal that will help.

Thanks again! Great forum and great advise.

If I have an issue with the tranny going into gear, I simply let out on the clutch pedal, then push it back in, then the tranny will slip right into gear.

Don't compare the sidekick clutch/pedal to the ranger clutch/pedal.  They won't necessarily act the same.  Just like when I used to have an S10 and my brother had a ranger....the clutches/pedals did not operate the same way, but there was nothing wrong with either one of them.

Disengaging and engaging near the floor is normal for a trackick (at least that is how I like them and adjust the linkage to set them that way, if possible).

They don't??

Every one I ever seen operated exactly the same way - clutch pedal up = clutch engaged - clutch pedal down = clutch disengaged - if it doesn't work that way - IT'S BROKEN.

Exactly where along the pedal travel it engages/disengages may be different - even on identical make & model vehicles, and should not be considered a problem - a Grand Vitara for example has a self adjusting hydaulic clutch, but, as the clutch nears the end of it's life, you'll notice the engagement point getting lower & lower, until you only have to think about releasing it, and that involuntary "muscle twitch" in your left leg that occurs with the thought will start the car rolling.

When the clutch is worn to this stage - you'll find that it drags - and selecting first becomes a struggle, and reverse will grind - and you can release it, and push it back in - as many times as you want - it will still baulk going into first, and grind going into reverse (it's the synchromesh that lets you get into first without grinding - but reverse is straight cut, and no syncromesh ...
