Transfer case / R/P gear ratio ?
« on: September 14, 2011, 07:15:38 PM »
I just picked up an 87 Sammie. I was tol ir has a different transfer case ratio and different gears in it also. I do know it has a locker in the rear and the front has been taken out before due to the amount of silicone he used to reinstall it!! I'm trying to figure out what the ratio might be without taking it all apart. It is very low geared as I dan walk faster than it can go in 4 low fist gear. Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance

For the axle gear, jack up one rear tire, put tcase in neutral with the front hubs unlocked (or you can leave the tcase in 2high and put the tranny in neutral), spin one rear tire TWO turns while counting the number of times the driveshaft turns.  That will be the axle gear ratio.
If the locker locks up, while you are turning, or if it has a spool or is welded, you are going to have to jack both rear tires off the ground and as long as they both turn the same direction and turn together, you can spin them just ONE turn and count the dshaft revs and that will give you the axle ratio.

For the tcase, put the tranny in neutral, put the tcase in low (front hubs unlocked), jack both rear tires off the ground, see how many turns of the tcase input shaft it takes to turn the tcase output shaft (or rear driveshaft), one revolution.  That will tell you what reduction the tcase has in low range.
