rear leaf spring setup
« on: September 18, 2011, 06:06:48 AM »
hi, own a LWB Samurai

seem to have problems before articulating the rear which resulted to our experimentation:

1. removed the overload spring rear (from the set of 4 leaf springs)
2. removed the middle spring and replaced it with a softer one
3. lowered shock mounting 1 inch more

so a total of 2 long leafs, and one short.

great great articulation!

only to find out the next morning, the springs started sagging already. :(

do you know a good spring setup sturdy enough to stay good at normal but can flex as much when needed?

I heard placing 2 long springs and 2 medium springs (removing the short one and the overload) works quite well.

we don't have access to many aftermarket parts here so DIY suggestions are appreciated!!

wanna get info first before I start dirtying my hands again..

thanks!

Switching to a longer spring might help.  Do you have Jeep CJ's available in the area?  If you can make new mounts you can use the front spring from a CJ, it's the same width so it takes less modification then switching to springs from a Jeep YJ Wrangler and the extra length helps with the articulation.

On my SJ-410 I use a stock rear spring pack with an extra long leaf but without an overload, it never came on the 410 and wasn't added until the SJ-413/Samurai.

I like the radius arm front setup on your SJ.

Hello sir Drone,

thanks for the comment! yes I was thinking the same thing. yes we have lots of wranglers here even on the yard which I think I can use.

so you just removed the overload spring? so you have a total of 4 leafs, correct?

okay might place a longer one this week with the top-most one, if I get to find one. if not I might just return the stock leaf that came from the samurai hence:

1 long leaf
1 extra long leaf as second (from the top)
1 stock leaf
1 stock short leaf

no overload, total of 4 leaf pieces

hope this turns out well! no wonder articulation was good- the former setup bends the spring downwards when the other side flexes upward he he he

thanks on the comment on the radius arm. :) it's a rear pajero/montero arm. need something longer, though

That used to be my setup, yes.  But after I bent up my second set of rear springs due to spring wrap I build a 4-link rear suspension.  A traction bar would also have resolved that issue.
