Samurai bogs when driving
« on: October 10, 2011, 11:48:00 AM »
Hey guys, I am new to the whole Samurai world. a few months ago i bought an '88 Samurai that had sat for several years. It is totally stock with the 1.3 liter in it.It was a rusted mess. After replacing all the floor pans, fender wells and most of the back deck it finally is waterproof again. I removed the gastank and cleaned it out good and replaced the fuel filter. I put in new plugs, wires, distributor and battery. After messing and cleaning and messing some more it finnaly starts and revs great. the problem is when I take it down the road it bogs bad. Like I said, it starts, idles and revs perfectly in my garage, but when I try and run it down the road its like it has bad gas in it. Ideas?

It's not a clogged cat. There's not one on it. When I had the new exhaust put on he didn't put the cat on.

This thing is nuts. I thought I had it but it started doing weird stuff again. I switched the 2 vaccuum lines going into the air box and when I did I heard what sounded like some type of diaphram open. I drove it a few miles and it ran like a champ. I brought it home and it sat for a few minutes and I took it for another ride. After a few miles it started choking and puking like it was out of gas. I made it home but it wouldn't even idle by the time I got it home. WTF?

try removing your gas cap and take it for a spin.

Tried the gas cap thing and nothing. I got to digging around a little more and found what i think the problem is. The choke on the carb is staying open all the time. When I start it, I can manually work the choke flap with my fingers as I rev the engine and it works great but as soon as I let loose of the choke, it opens all the way and the engine stalls. The choke looks like it operates from a small arm on the back of the carb that looks like its on some type of round spindle. Its almost like I have lost a spring or maybe a vacuum line or diapham is not working correctly. I need to take a few things apart to be able to see better back there. I plan on digging in deeper tonight. Ever seen this before?

The carb needs to be cleaned, if it requires choke to run
there is a blockage in the jets or crap in the bowl, could
even water that got in there and is messing with the fuel
flow through the jets, also check for the correct fuel level
in the float bowl and any clogged filters that might be
restricting fuel getting to the carb

I guess I am going to be forced to totally remove the carb. I have messed with it for hours and it still wont run.

When is starts the only way I can keep it running is to pump the gas continuously. As soon as I stop to doing that or I floor it, it bogs and stalls. Would having the vacuum lines hooked up wrong cause that?

I might have figured it out. As I was messing around with the carb I noticed that the arm in the diapram that controls the choke was not moving with the diaphram. I could watch the plunger move in and out with the rpms of the motor, but the arm never moved. I took it off and put it under vacuum and it will not hold. I think it is not functioning correctly. What is that piece called. I guess I need to order one?

Get a rebuild kit for the rubber and paper parts, as well
as it will come with the other wear parts
