89 Sidekick ECM # question
« on: October 17, 2011, 07:07:42 PM »
Hey guys, new to the forum but I just picked up an 89 Suzuki Sidekick 4x4, 5 speed manual, TBI for only 850.00. It's really clean but the ECM is fried. the board inside is charred so it is not rebuildable.  I found an ECM on another website. It's # is 33920-60a32.(unknown year but it is from a manual sidekick)

The ECM that is fried in my sidekick is # 33920-60a31. Since the # is off by just one digit. Will it work? He said it does come with a warranty.

The only thing that has me worried is if I plug in his after buying it and whatever charred the first one, might char this one as well. The sidekick I bought looks good and well maintained with no aftermarket parts. I'm just wondering why the first melted down so bad it can't be repaired. Judging by the looks in there, it's a darn good thing the hole sidekick didn't burn up. The harness plugs that go into the burnt ECM are not hurt at all. (miraculously) Looks like the big diodes and caps just let go all at once.

33920-60A32 - lists as being for an SE416 - '89~91 - theoretically it should work.

It's a lot harder to comment on the "fried ECU" - but from your description the damage sounds extremely unusual - I guess you need to locate a schematic and at least check the wiring.

89/90 trackicks use the ECMs with the gold colored cases.  If the one you are planning on getting is gold colored, it will work.  If it is gray, it will not work.
When the capacitors go in the ECMs they can damage the board pretty bad sometimes.  So I would guess that is all that happened to the old one.

Thanks. I am concerned about plugging in another one that I paid 140.00 for and have it smoke. It might be best to do what you suggest and get a schematic. I'll give an update when I plug it in and cross my fingers

Got it. He didn't say if it was a gray one or not but if it comes to me in the mail and its not gold, I'll just send it back. Thanks for letting me know this

The number you list is for an 89/90 ECM.  So it should be gold.

She's running.....the ECM that came in was in a gray box but the # 33920-60A32 had been labeled over another label. So apparently they ran out of gold boxes at the refurb store. I took a big chance buying a car that I can't hear running, but a simple plug in and reassemble the dash, took it for a spin down the street, engaged 4wd on a hill in the back yard. Sweet. Now for the tags and inspection.

Sometimes when they rebuild them, they paint them (I don't know why).  I suppose they could switch the cases, but that would be kinda dumb on their part.

The main thing is you got it going.
