98 soft top question
« on: October 28, 2011, 02:18:21 AM »
i was looking into buying a new top for my tracker but everything ive found has lead me to believe i am missing a hoop that follows the "sport bar". previous owner put the current top on it and it fits like garbage, back window has been repaired a few times. I am thinking the current top is for an earlier tracker.

this picture you can see the rear corners do not line up, never have since ive owned it. the thing i have noticed is that the later models all have side windows that unzip and the earlier ones do not. hence why i think its an older top

The picture with the top on, That is the Wrong Year Top for that year rig.

You have a '98, you need '95 - '98. It is at least 4 pieces. Full Bikini, Both Sides Zip Out and Zip Out Rear Window.

That top is for '88 - '94. 2 pieces. Full Top with Side Windows, and Zip Out Rear Window.

You will like the Correct Style for that Year. It will have Zip Out side windows and rear. You can run it like a Full Bikini Top.

Before you buy a new top, please take better pictures of the Side Rail/Mounting area. It kinda looks like the previous owner made a Hybrid mounting for it.

This the best I could come up with without taking the top off at work

And this is where the missing hoop should be according to the pictures I've seen

From the pictures, it looks like someone has switched out ALL of your Hardware with an Earlier Model Top.

The Side Windows "wing" out and their should be a clip like the tailgate has, so the sides will "click" into place.

The Rear Window has a fiberglass rod and pushes into the clips, clipping into place too. That looks correct for the Early Model.

You're first pictures of the poor fit, I think is because you don't have the rear corners on correctly.

Try this, Unhook your front header panel, above the visors, and flip it open. Now try to hook the rear corners. They kinda pull down, then slide up into place. You should have a molded plastic corner on that top. It's a bit curved too, it will sit in the corner just right. Then Latch the front back down. See if things fit better?

If they do, I believe your Rig is Complete for the Early Model Top, '88 - '94. You can get those New with Tinted Windows on Ebay for $159 shipped. I've had a couple on different rigs, I think they fit great!

Do those things and come back. I'll help you more after we see how this goes.

As for the bar/hoop you mentioned, that's for the Newer Models, which you have, but again, someone had swapped out the hardware, so you don't need it now with the set up you are showing.

Actually, I'd suspect a previous owner of your Tracker, probably had a Hard Top. Figured they'd make a little extra, or put the top on another Tracker.

In doing so, they probably put it on an Older Tracker and just swapped out the Entire Soft Top and Hardware onto your Rig. It would be very easy to do, with both Trackers/Sidekicks sitting side by side.

Thanks for the info rear corners seems to be too far back so I know there are a few 2wd ones at my pick and pull and see it they are right.

That isn't possible. They only mount in one location on the Tracker and those on the Top are sewn in.

You need to get some "slack" in there, attach the rear corners correctly, then pull the front section down and clip it.

You don't need to remove anything, but lift up the rear corners of the top and see if the plastic part is on the top? If so, try to get it to fit.

Also, you didn't mention if you have the side window clips? They'll look just like those on the tailgate and they are attached by the bend on the side windows, near the strap with a snap.

It does have them. I locked in the rear and closed the top the rear corners lifted off the body and almost snapped. But than again it was probably too cold to lock correctly. Maybe ill try the garage and the torpedo heater

The Rear Corner, that is attached to the Body, is part of the Entire Side Window frame. It has 2 screws on the Top/Targa area, and just one screw on the back/tailgate area.

They are pretty durable, I'd suggest taking the Soft Top loose and looking to see if the Corner on the Body, is mounted correctly.

You may want to make sure you are putting the corners together correctly too. It's kinda hard to explain, but the Corner on the soft top, will pull DOWN, then you will slide it UP INTO the Mount on the Body. IT is a Very TIGHT Fit once correctly installed.

See if you can take pictures of the Corners, both on the top and on the body. I will try and take some pics from my Sidekick too.

Not my picture, but this is what the rear corners will do.

You will pull them down, then you kinda tuck or slide the plastic corner of the top, into the corner of the body. They are a little bit curved, so they will fit better properly installed.

my rear corners are a piece of plastic screwed down that runs the length of the rear section, i looked at a few in the bone yard, got it figured out and ordered a top. if you look at the picture of the back fiberglass clip the part with the hole is the part that pulled up off the body but i think its from the top being on incorrectly for so long and its needs to stretch out. i also got a few more clips for the wings on the sides, got one side locked in on mine correctly and the other side is broken, but i will be happy once the new top comes and fits right. its already quieter with one side locked in. thanks again.

Yes, that Looks Broken.

Seeing the top and hardware in a junk yard helps visualize what it looks like when installed. It definately is hard to describe.

I hope it all works out.
