Air Lockers and GVs
« on: May 02, 2004, 09:29:16 PM »
Hi,
I've gone and killed the front diff in my 2003 GV, so I'm now wanting to put ARB Airlockers into it :) Has anybody done this to theirs? if so do you have a list of what you needed to get? Does anybody know if they changed the diff in the 2003 GV to the same as the XL7?

I have a V6 manual, so steal 3rd. All the housing is ok, i have just stuffed the shift on the fly setup in the diff. It will not hold in place anymore, it clicks over under load. Had someone from Suzuki come out to look at it, suggested that if I wanted to play hard in it I should goto difflocks and manual hubs :)

So far I have worked it out to be the 5.12 R/P for the rear with my diff centre and the air locker, a complete 5.12 front diff centre from a 96-98 vitara with cv stub axle and airlocker to replace the "shit on the fly" diff and some manual hubs.

Does this sound about right?  I having trouble finding someone in Australia that has done an install of these.

I have the ARB's.  I've been really happy with them.

You'll have to drill and tap a hole in the third member for the air line to go through.  Wasn't that hard.

Then you need an air sorce.  I got the front and rear at the same time.  So I got the ARB air compressor and harness with switches.

Anyway, you'll need a air pump, pressure switch (to turn the pump on and off), an electrical air switch (to turn the air on and off), wiring, storage tank (ARB cums with a pop can size tank on the compressor)  and a switch.

I put my pump in the right rear quarter panal and hooked up a 12v computer fan to keep it cool.  I didn't want to put it under the hood.

There is no such thing as a "shift on the fly" front diff. They are all the same. What makes it shift on the fly, is the drive flanges instead of hubs. They make everything spin instead of freewheel like the manual hubs allow.
If you have nothing wrong with the front diff, maybe you should just look at putting manual hubs off a kick on it.
Unless they did something that I'm not aware of, with the "shift on the fly" thing. HEHE!!!

The GV shift on the fly is definitely different to the old vitara ('kick) front diff, it uses air pressure from the on-board compressor to engage the front diff.

The parts you've described are what you need to do the conversion.  See the article in the technical section of the article archive.
