Dash Lights / Instrument Cluster lights not working

The only electrical mod is a set of cheap off-road lights. Their wiring doesn't seem to interfere.

The problem: 98% of the time the cluster lights don't work. Once in a while they'll flicker on, usually when I'm accelerating. I can't seem to trace the short, except where the wire going out of their circuit crosses the center of the vehicle to terra incognita, because I've thus far been too lazy to remove the entire dashboard. Assuming I'm reading the electrical diagram correctly, can anyone tell me what the sonovabitching hell I'm missing?

The guages all work as they should, I've pulled and tested the bulbs as well.

On an unrelated note, can anyone give me an idea why she runs between 2000 and 3000 RPMs? (Stock engine, stock carb) Adjusting the throttle onle lowered it by a couple hundred. Maybe the accelerator cable is too short? I'll check that, and if anyone has any ideas in the mean time, I'd appreciate any any input, even if you're just calling me a dummy because I'm missing something obvious. Thanks,

I'm going to guess that a radio "install" tapped into it someplace (for the radio illumination), and the saran wrap insulation has fallen off ;)

You indicate the only electrical mod was off-road lights, but unless you're the original owner, it wouldn't surprise me if someone, sometime, someplace put in a radio and the remnants of that are bundled up inside the dash.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

Riiiiiiight. The radio. I didn't even think of that. See, that's why I ask stoopid questions.

I'll rip that apart and see what I can see.
