2.5/2.7 in a 97 Tracker
« on: November 19, 2011, 02:06:08 PM »
I have a few questions about this swap.
Will my 5 speed bolt to the V6 bellhousing?
Is a body lift needed for clearance?
What codes would be kicked if you had a 2.5 auto ecu?
Thanks
1997 Tracker 5 speed 2WD :( getting a locker and always on the lookout for parts for the 4WD conversion

Your manual 5 speed should bolt to a V6 manual bellhousing.  There are some 2.5 manual transmission GV's out there, and very few 2.7 manual's.  With the wrong transmission you will get a communication failure, which should trigger limp home mode, no TC lock and no OD.  Even the wrong automatic can trigger this code.
Blending the wiring/computers with your 97 takes patience.
There are pan, front diff., and hood clearance issues unless you have a body lift or SAS.  Right now I am running with a 1" hood opening and using tie down straps to ensure it doesn't pop open.
93 Tracker,XL7 springs & 1" raised spring pads in front with YJ springs in back, home built bumpers rear & front (w/winch), 2" x 4" rock tubes,  ARB front & rear, converted Sami rear to IFS, 33x12.5x15  aluminum rims, roll cage, 2.7L w/5 speed auto.

I don't think the 4-cylinder 5-speed will bolt to the V6. Maybe, but I've got a 2.7 with the manual and its a totally different transmission. I haven't broken it apart to see what the pattern looks like but even if it did bolt together, I'd be a little worried about applying 3x torque to that transmission. A better option may be to find a 2.5/2.7 V6 with the manual and bolt that w/t-case into your Sidekick all in one shot... The only down side is if you want to put crawler gears into your GV/XL7 t-case.

Good luck, Eric
