New zuk owner -- lift questions
« on: May 01, 2004, 03:05:09 AM »
I am a new zuk owner -- 87' samurai hardtop.
It's in good shape and runs well.  I have been itching to lift it, but need some direction on what components are working well for you.  I have read about Trail Tough and Rocky Road, etc. but don't know what is the best product.

The first modification will be the lift.  I would like to accomidate 33x12.50 so a 6" plus lift is required.  Along with this is a ring and pinion change.  So what are your thoughts -- what will work and won't work.

Keep in mind I do want to drive on the road as well as off road.

i do own a sammy so i don't have a clue about ride quality(sp) but i am looking into buying one.  it would be almost all street  so i was think of going coils at least in the front.  but it would have to be geared so stick tracker gears would be swaped in and need more power so a 1.6 would be swaped.

The best set-up right now I believe is one that uses Wrangler springs, "missing link" style shackles, and a spring over axle swap. If I did't alredy have my Trailmaster 3" springs and the Calmini shackle reversal(with a SPOA in the works); I would go with the longer Wrangler springs. I still might if the wheel travel isn't as much as I would like after the SPOA. If you opt for stock lenght springs I think Old Man Emu springs are great, but I have been very pleased with my Trailmasters. There are many different lift options available in the aftermarket today. When I bought my lift about 8 years ago the selection was very limited unless you wanted to start fabricating your own stuff, but now there are even bolt-on SPOA kits available and lots and lots of trick goodies.

ROCKY ROAD has great poducts just a slow service .. Trail tough is reliable .. sop withthat said I like the way Rocky road's spoa e-z weild perches work . i have them on my front axle and my rear is a Trail tough hybrid  I have 5.12 gears .. one note make sure if you go spoa you get a drivshaft spacer and bump stopextentions ..don't say i didn't warn you if you don't  in fact in the rear I suggest a drivshaft change either a toy front or a aftermarket one I hav ethe KAD in mine  now for the tail of no spacer or bump stops no spacer your shaft with slip apart and rip your brake lines out .. no bump stops you'll break a spring.
ohh i forgot ... you need to get either a z link , pitnam arm or some over the top type streeing correction . i'm currently using a z link and yes you can feel the bump steer

I'm looking for pratically the same end result. But my build up will take a while. For suspension Stock YJ's, SPOA (spring over axle) some bilsteens for shocks, and most likely a Shackle reversal for the front. But to aide in the ride quailty, I'm stretching the front of the frame 8", and moving the front axle about 5" or so forward, and moving the rear back about 3". Looking for about an 87" wheelbase, every little bit helps! 33x?x15 is my end goal. With a wife who's 4'11" 35's are out of the question.

These plans are still on the drawing board, but should be done by the end of summer. (along with a 22r drivetrain swap too.)

i myself also like the rocky road spring perches. They really make getting the pearches on right really easy.

If you want to keep your stock drive shaft i would order one of trail toughs extended slip yokes other than a drive shaft spacer.  as far as lift  if you have the money go wrangler, you want be disapointed. If not just get a spring over and go from there.

Just keep in mind if you go up 6+ inches of susp. lift to put some $$$ aside for drive line and steering correction.

;DWelcome to the tribe.  The Trail Tough wrangler spring mounts for the front and the rear are excellent.  You can fab your own missing links ff and rr if yoy want.  Longer shock towers by Sky Man. are good, you will need longer driveshafts as well.  I agree with longer bumpstops as well.  Good luck!  Jeff :D

I've been into sammys for years, all modified....heavily. I can honestly say, the Jeep springs on a sammy with a spring over, is definitely the way to go.
I have a lwb sammy now with fullsize jeep Grand Wagoneer springs all the way around, I love it! I did a spoa to a buddies sammy with CJ fronts in the front, and Wagoneer fronts in the back, he is absolutely dumbfounded with how well it rides and flexes.
I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.
You can use the Trailtough YJ kit, and for a nice upgrade from the YJ springs, try the 76-91 full-size Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer(84-91)/Cherokee(76-83)/J-series 1/2 ton truck(76-88) front springs front and rear. They are 1 1/2" longer on the shackle end from the center bolt than the Yj springs. They can handle a load a lot better, flex better, move very easily, and live a lot longer than the YJs do. You have to remove a leaf from the pack, but, not a big deal, just buy the right size center bolts from a local spring place, carefully use a couple of 6" c-clamps, and make sure you take out only one or two of the shorter leaves. It is very well worth the effort!
