1.8 belt tensioner
« on: December 05, 2011, 04:07:25 AM »
Morning guys,
Just changed the water fump and thermostat on my 98 1.8 sport.
Ive got a new serepentine belt and cant figure out where the tensioner is?

Is the tensioner under a pulley?

Ive looked at pictures of the tensioner it self and dont see it anywhere.  Found the fan belt tensioner but not the serpentine.

Any pics or tips to where it is, or under what pulley and the best way of doing it?

Usually the alternator or the power steering pump is what is used to tension the serpentine/ribbed belt.  Have you looked at either of those (I'd look at the alternator first)?

Ya i checked the alt and i didnt really see any thing. what ive seen pics of does not look like it would be hooked/tied into anything but more of its own pulley with the tensioner behind it?
I did check behind the AC compressor and water pump also obvisouly not on either of thoes.
Im just not sure if what im looking for is it an actuall bracket like the fan belt tensioner?
Or is it what I've seen pictures of which is a round, im assuming pulley like device?

I know the 1.6 and 1.8 are different animals but if noone knows about the 1.8  tensioner at this point any info on the 1.6 one might help if they have some similarities so i can track it down.

Yeah, the AC compressor is another potential adjustment point.  Let me look and I'll let you know where to tension the belt.
The tension points I mention apply to the 1.6s.  I am not that familar with the 1.8s, so that is why I wasn't specific with my info.

All ive found was a diagram saying that the 3 bolts for the fan belt are part of the tension system.

If anyone is familiar with the fan belt tensioner this diagram shows as so...

Bolt 1&2 (top and middle bolts in L shape fan tensioner)  are adjusting bolts.

It then sais bolt 3 (bottom most) is a pivot bolt.  This may all be for just the fan belt but i will be checking soon to see if it does anything for the serpentine.

Im not really sure how to post pics without a host but ive googled sidekick sport serpentine tensioner and it shows the little pulley looking device earlier described.

Mabey someone with a sport could look at the google image and see if they have any idea where it is on the motor. Im just very confused.  It has to be there, theres only so many places it can be for its purpose... Which leads me to believe its under or part of another pulley and im not seeing it.

found the tensioner.
It is the pulley next to the crank pulley.  As you loosen the pulley drops down and up as tightened.  Belt is a little to long to bypass AC compressor but that will be switched eventually.

If any one else is interested in this just post here and I'll get some pics of where it is.  Exactly as diagram showed part just didnt look the same.

Don't feel so bad, it took me a while to find it on one, it moves the opposite direction of the way that I thought it should have moved.
