Sami Trans Shifter bolt fix question
« on: January 04, 2012, 09:09:15 AM »
I've got the trans apart for rebuild and par for the course my shifter bolt had broken at some point.  Luckily it was still held in place with a thread or two and had not fallen into the trans case.

Now, I have ordered both the replacement bolt and a larger bolt from I think the tracker?  I heard you can just drill and retap for the larger bolt and never worry about it breaking again, thats my plan.

Question is,

1. does anyone know the drill and tap size needed for this bolt?
2. I have also seen a dual bolt fix where you slot the front side of the shifter ball and drill and tap the housing to hold the shifter from both sides.  Has anyone tried this and is it a worthwhile mod?  Shifter still feels ok after two bolts?

Yeah, I was just hoping someone knew by chance what the pitch was.  I had extra time at lunch today so I went by the tool shop and found out....

Small bolt is a 8mmx 1.25 pitch, requires a 17/64" drill bit for the tap
Large bolt is a 10mm x 1.25 pitch, requires an 11/32" drill bit for tap

I'll keep you informed on how the retro fit goes... i might be able to get this knocked out this afternoon.

Notice how much larger the tip of the larger bolt is.  It won't fit in the slot in the shifter.  So plan on either widening the slot in the shifter or finding a shifter from a later model samurai that uses the larger bolt and shifter.  I think it was in 88.5 when the samurais started using the larger bolt and shifter (it might have been 90 though).
Or I guess you could turn the tip of the bolt down, but that kinda defeats the whole purpose of going to a larger bolt.

Oh, and actually the trackicks use the smaller sized bolts, not the larger ones.

Thanks for the input.  I figured I'd need to adjust the slot for the larger bolt but thanks for the clarification.  I'm still tossing around the idea of drilling the second hole for a two bolt setup while its out and in pieces, one of those "no better time than now" kind of things.
