spare mounted hi lift - vitara
« on: April 29, 2004, 08:38:14 AM »
I've read the previous posts about mounting a hi lift in/on the car, and have just seen some brackets to fix the hi lift to a spare wheel.

Although I run 235x75's they are on 8x15 alloys so the weight is not excessive. I guess the hi lift weight 50lbs; does anyone have experience as to whether the wheel mount / door skin / hinges will bear the extra weight??

I guess an advantage will be that the jack can be securely mounted which should reduce any swinging about on trails, as it does at present strapped to my roof rack.

I hope someone can give feedback from known experience or technical data.

wot - no replies??......

I've therefore gone for simplicity and fitted a pair of 4XRAC brackets from Hi-Lift to the roof rails fore & aft, using exhaust U bolts, on the passenger side, and simply dropped the jack onto that; job done, doesn't look quite as butch as hanging it on the rear as per Jeeps & Land Rovers, but a professional finish results.

No more supermarket car parks for me then!!

....... that'll be the end of this topic then .... still, it may be of use to another "searcher" in the future!!!

I HAD my hi-lift mounted to the "step" in the body, just in front of the back seat (2-door).  I had to remove it when I welded in my roll-bar.

Now, I don't know where to put it...

put it on the roof ---

looks cool,

easier to reach when you're up to the doors in mud,

no splashing of silty muddy water into the mechanism when racing through muddy puddles

no issues with turning your bumpers into lethal weapons

---and think of all the extra things you can put on the roof later

---and you have the perfect excuse why you can't just nip down to the supermarket for her !!!

We don't get mud like that.
My bumpers will always be lethal weapons - there's a TON of Calmini steel, front & back.
I have a SOFT TOP - don't WANT stuff on the "roof!"!

Where I live, you don't just "nip" anywhere!  It's a 25 minute drive to civilization.  That's what the 4-door is for!

If you got the Calmini Swing-away back bumper there's a bracket for mounting the Hi-lift back there. The sell it but don't advertise ???

I never knew Calmini did one of those - it's exactly what I would have wanted - but any how perhaps its for the best - I probably couldn't afford the cost of buying and shipping to the UK; Calmini would probably have said it wouldn't fit my car; and it would have taken forever to arrive!!!

My Vitara is a soft top, with the factory roof rails, and I have the 48" jack
