Questions about 1.0 Suzuki Modifications

Clearly this site is mainly for the 4x4 crowd but I thought I might find some help here. If I'm in the wrong place please let me know.

I have a 1.0 Suzuki from a Geo Metro that I want to use in a narrowed 1927 Model T Ford. I've cut 5" out of its width (the T) and will be building what is typically refered to as a "one man modified". These were popular on the dry lakes in the 1930's/1940's.

I chose this engine because of it's size. I'm extremely limited on space under the hood. Space limitations also dictate that I run an automatic transmission (no room for a clutch pedal). I'll drive it locally but don't have any plans to put it on the interstate. "Power" isn't a huge concern with this one. As long as it runs and keeps up with local traffic I'm OK.

Is there a rear wheel drive trans that will mate to the 1.0?

The distributor on my engine comes straight out the back of the head. If it would turn 90* and point straight up, it would save me a few inches in the length of the engine compartment. Is there a 90* adaptor that will work on my 1.0?

I believe the 1.0 shares the bolt-up with the 1.3l, so you could use an automatic transmission from a Suzuki Samurai.  I know they are out there, but don't know anything about them.  Hopefully someone else will speak up.  You could probably make the one from a Tracker/Sidekick as well.

Samurai does not have an auto, just a 5 speed. You could use a "lucky 13" adapter and use a tracker/sidekick 3 speed auto. You could also use the 4 speed autos from those rigs but they need the ecm etc to work. Best to find an auto from a 2 wheel drive, but if it is from a 4x4 you could still use the tranny but would need the tailshaft adapter from trail tough.

Keep in mind that motor will not produce much HP, and the auto will make it feel sluggish if not geared correctly.

I belive there are distributor housing changes that can be made to shift it to the position you want but I don't remember off hand what it takes.

Yes, the samurai 1.3 and the metro 1.0 share the same tranny flange, so a samurai tranny will bolt up.  But there are only 5 speeds in samurais, no autos.  All the metros were front wheel drive, so the auto trannys in them won't work for a rwd application.
As said, you could buy/make an adapter and use a tracker/sidekick 3 speed auto tranny.
There are different distributor caps (where the towers come out the sides of the cap), that will supposedly work on the 1.0.  These caps supposedly come off of a mazda engine of some sort (I think).  Sorry I don't have more specific info.

I helped a friend on his 1.0 metro racer at Bonneville last fall... much like the Samurai, talk about an undergog  :-*
I have another friend, who has set a bunch of records at Bonneville with 1.0 and 1.3 production Geo metros, but you said you don't care much about power, so

I have a few thoughts:
1) What a cool project!
2) Guys swap 1.0 and 1.3 fwd Metro transaxles between each other all of the time, same mating.
3) Unless you are a machinist and like to tinker, I would avoid relocating the distributor at all costs
     a) The 1.0 is pretty short, even with the distributor hanging out the end. Are you sure it won't fit into the engine bay as-is?
     b) If you must, you might be able to relocate it so it drives off the front of the cam, rather than the rear
     c) you might be better off converting to coil-on-plug ignition x3, rather than trying to adapt/make a 90deg dist drive.

I suppose you could chain  drive it to a baker or stock Harley transmition and hand clutch it on the shifter.....Just an out of the box idea...Boxcar..
