Automatic or Manual??Please Help!
« on: May 01, 2004, 03:01:13 PM »
Hi,
I just bought a tracker and the engine has a bad rattling noise do you know if it is a rod or could it be a wrist pin? It is an automatic. I bought another tracker for parts and it has a good engine and manual transmission.  Should I put the manual or automatic transmission in it??  What are you guys running automatic or manual?  What do you think is better for offroading? Does the automatic have better gearing than the manual?? Thanks for the help!!!   Justin

Auto is nice offroad, but the 1st is higher than the
Man Trans, and the 3rd is lower than 5th on a Man
Trans.

Man Trans has 5.12:1 Diff Gears, Auto has 4.62:1
so use the Man Trans Axles/diffs in the Auto and
it will help for bigger tires

As far as Bad Noise ??? I'd have to hear it, a rattling
noise to me, I'd say that if I were describing a loose
heat sheild on the exhaust, a knock when the cylinder
is firing is a bad thing, unless it's piston slap, then it's
just a normal worn engine sound.

How many miles, would help to determin the problem too.

Run the auto!  I run an auto 4 door on 35" boggers with the ifs.  It's not a race car off the line, but offroad I wouldn't have anything else.  Just make sure to put a tranny cooler on it.

Mine originally had the 5 speed and i changed to automatic, don't miss it a bit. Mine has the overdrive that i can lock in or out,so for around town at the stoplights its locked out and on the freeway the OD is great! Plus it keeps your hands free for eating Fast food and drinks ;D ;D ;D
