gas smell in cabin
« on: May 19, 2005, 06:21:45 AM »
Today at lunch a co-worker commented that my Tracker smelled like gas inside.  I din't notice it at first but did notice is more later.  I don't have the greatest sense of smell.  Someone else commented about in in the past when wheeling and it was at an odd angle.  I don't notice the smell in the engine compartment.  Where is the fuel line from the tank to the engine?  Also can you see or feel the top of the tank to see if there is rust hole?  I don't have a body lift.   Any other ideas?  Thanks.

It may be easiest to just drop the tank a bit and have a look see. Just loosen the bolts on the filler neck side about a quarter inch and remove the two bolts from the other side it should come down enough so you can see the top pretty well.

The fuel lines run on the inside of the pass. side frame rail, there are 3 fuel lines. Check the lines where they attach to the sending unit on the tank, sometimes the lines split around the hose clamp(s).
You can't feel the top unless you drop the tank. If all the original hardware is there and not rusted/rotton, it's really easy to drop the tank.

Tonight I started to drop the tank.  What a pain.  The skid plate bolts all are very hard to turn.  Once they loosen a bit then the other end of it just spins and it is hard to get a wrench on the top side.  I finally got one out and it broke when loosening it.  I think the other 3 will be just as hard.  Do the bolts that hold the tank in get as mucked us as the skid plate bolts?  Tonight I was seriously thinking of getting rid of the tracker because I couldn't get the tank out and wasn't going to pay a lot to have a shop fix it.  If anyone in Illinois want to work on it I'll pay them for their time!

the 4 skidplate bolts are also the tank bolts. Once they are out, the tank is no longer bolted in. Newer Tracks had one different bolt than the skid, but not your 90...

I can get a tank from a 95 2 door that in the picture looks just like the top of my tank.  Is it likely to fit in my 90?

i'm not sure if its the same on my 89 vit, but there are 4 bolts from the bottom up that hold my tank, all 4 have captive nuts. i never had a skid plate on mine, nor have i seen one here with a skid.

anyway, when i got my vit, one of the return or breather tubes which go into the tank broke loose. hoses were all still good, and all connected, but the actual metal pip that goes front the hose, does a 90* and into the tank was loose. everytime i filled up, i'd have fuel leak and smell.

i had to drop my tank, drain it, wash it out, and then braze weld the tube back in. was kinda scary using the oxy on my tank.

i think the best way to find out, is to drop the tank.
and i was going to say, if you had a body lift, 3", now would be a good time to lift the tank, seeing as you'll probably break the other 3 bolts getting it off.
