I'm driving all the way from NE Oklahoma, 750 miles one-way, in a Samurai.

If this wasn't a day and 3 hour drive to and from for me I'd be there... 1500mi is a long way to ride in a little samurai
I wussin' out this time and towing the Tracker behind a pickup with a camper. I plan to make time on the expressways this trip, crashing in the camper when I get too tired.  I only have a limited amount of time, and want to spend as much of it in CO as possible. Did the cross country trip in the Tracker a couple of years ago logging 6000+ miles in about a month. Fun yes, but that's one noisy, bumpy, long ass ride. And that was in a reletively smooth Tracker compared to a Sammy.
Just Google mapped the distance from my house in NJ to the Taylor Park Trading Post: 1865 miles. They figure 1 day 9 hours, or 34 hrs total. I've done it with a co driver rotating sleeping and driving shifts in 36 hrs straight. Don't reccomend that, we were both wasted for days afterward  I'm shooting for 3 12+hr days each way. That's just about how much vaca time I have left for this year too, how convienent  8)

Yes, I'll have my family and at least three other families will be there as well.

My wife wants to come along but probably wont be able to make the drive out and back, slavemasters where she works won't let her take more than 1 week vacation at a time. She has 36 days accrued, but they insist in this stupid policy.  We're going to try and arrange for her to fly into Aspen where I can pick her up on Saturday night, then drop her off there again the next Friday.

Try flights to Gunnison, only about 40 miles away and United flys in and out regularly.

Into Gunnison you will only have the puddle jumper flights ( I lived there for 15 years and worked the airport, still have a house there). I might make it, always wanted to do some of the tougher passes above Taylor (Pearl and Taylor Passes), but the snow was always to heavy, even in late Sept. If I can swing it, I will go over to Gunnison and make this run. Lots of light wheeling on the Buena Vista side as well. Another neat, scenic trail is American Flag Mountain (Cement Creek/ CB south). It right around the Taylor Res. area, you can drive to the top of a 12k mountain.
Just heard on the news that snowpack here is only 58%, so campfires might be iffy (high fire danger already).

Thanks for the Tip!  Puddle jumper flights are fine. We did the same thing when I went out west on my " test drive " trip. Picked her up in El Paso Tx, but she flew back out of Moab in a small plane, to Denver. she said it was "fun."

Are these something that a relatively stock samurai can tackle? Im still a 4x4 noob, but if it can handle it that would be cool considering I live in CO lol.

I will either take a stock or mildly build Samurai.  No lockers and no huge meats.  Going more for the scenic passes, logging roads etc.  We can tag along if others want to try more technical trails.

I do think you'd be just fine with a stock Samurai. This will mostly be a scenic run with optional hard spots.
