Super Traxion Bias Ply Tires
« on: February 16, 2012, 07:45:36 PM »
Has anyone ever tried any of these tires?  Made in the USA.  I haven't checked cost on any of them but they appear to have a market niche for old school off-road type tires that would appeal to forum members.  I'm thinking they might not be Intercos but they would probably wear longer driving on the hard ball and be more versatile for off-roading than AT treaded tires.  Yeah, I know, they are bias ply, but that doesn't eliminate them for use in daily drivers.  They have a variety of sizes in 15", 16" and 16.5" and widths from real pizza cutters to some fatties.  Oh, yeah, I'm not a sales rep for them either, just asking if anyone has tired them.

STA makes good stuff.  Their 9.00-16 Super Lugs have a good reputation among military vehicle owners.  I encountered them on www.SteelSoldiers.com as a lot of M37 and M715 owners liked them for their trucks.  Bit more modern tread and better performance than the old NDT's.

Personally I wouldn't buy them for a DD.  Neat older vehicle or a general wheeler...maybe.  Hard core wheeling I'd get an actual offroad tire.  Hard to be a Swamper.  On road then there's many better radial mud tires out there that will work just fine for daily driving even in winter.  My ex's XL7 had a set of Kumho MT's in 225/75R16 and after I siped them we never did anything but drive on them for three Michigan winters.  No problems, no fuss.  Stuck to the road and dug through the deep stuff.

i really want a set for my 2" lifted vitara, but am confused with the size. had 7.00-15 on an old 88 ranger at stock height and i beleve it was close to a 31" tire but way narrower, and was a far better tire than a wider tire in mud. no exception. if anyone know the size that would be close to a 235/75/15 it be appreciated!!!  ;D

SUPER TRAXION LT 78 TUBELESS

L78-15LT    A D/8 LB3H5 18/32 9.00 30.00 6.50 2120 2400 65 37.0

That said...it's a heavy sucker!  Me personally I'd just buy a newer mud tire in a radial.  Just about EVERY good mud tire is made in that size.

They also have that...which seems to me to be a modern tread design but still with all the downsides of bias ply tires.

I liked the tire sizes Traxion offered (tall and narrow pizza cutters) and they would fit a stock 5.5" Tracker rim size.  A 30" tire, 7" wide, mounted on my factory 5.5" rims.... would completely clear my inner frame when turning lock to lock. I don't think even Interco offers these sizes in their tire lines.  I have never rolled one of my Suzuki trucks on bias ply tires and was curious just how "bad" the ride is with 28-30 pounds of pressure in them with these old school "mud grip" designed tires.

I generally try to avoid interstate driving.  I've heard from many about the off-road benefits of the Interco tires but they were designed as primarily an off road use tire, their large heavy lugs wear down very quickly on hard ball, and traction on wet roads wasn't a consideration for many of their bias designs, plus the extra road noise from their hyper-aggressive tread design.  I was looking for something in between AT type radials and Intercos, I guess.

I'd probably mount them on a spare set of rims so I wouldn't be stuck rolling just the STs all year long.  Current AT and MT radials are limited in available size and widths and I don't see that changing in the future, just getting worst.  Bias tires are better suited to "clean" themselves of mud and debris.  These STs tires were designed for on and off-road use although I understand I couldn't expect Michelin LTX traction on the hard ball.   Dual use tires are a compromise.  It just sucks loosing traction in 1/2" of mud.  Just looking at what is available and exploring the different options.

You really keep describing a good set of radial muds.  A set of BFG MT's in 235/75R15 would do all that.

There's decades more technology in any current radial mud than the obsolete old bias plies STA sells.  Are they a bad product?  No.  Are they cutting edge?  Maybe in 1973.

As far as Swampers wearing that's because those reviews generally come from folks running them under larger, heavier trucks, running too much PSI in them, or expecting them to drive/last like said Michelins.

If you really want a bias ply offroad tire that will chuck mud then check out the smaller Swamper TSL bias ply sizes.  I'd bet ya money that they'd last as long as those STA tires and still outperform them every day offroad.

In fact they even have a small/narrow TSL Radial:

i have checked for a smaller tire for my vitara in an interco brand, the smallest they got is a 31", all size under that is obsolite or not availlable right now. interco tires are mostly bias tires as well, they make radials but are not "buyable" on a budjet i love the recap tires, trail master ets, they had treads like a mickey thompson mtz tires, i did a pricing of 475$ canadian with tax and installed at a local tire shop. im saving a few bucks and getting them for my vitara

i had a set of bias tire before, its true they are not so great for road use, they flex a bit more in turns, spongy ride,a bit heavier, went the truck is parked, the tires stay oval because of the weight and will stay like this for a 2-3 miles of driving, then it rools like new, (makes the truck jump a bit lol) but in the woods they are amazing, they grip as hell and they clean out very good. only issues i had was that they weather crack a bit more than a radial as they flexes more. i did a 45,000km on them, then got a flat due to the weather cracked, i put in a tube and ran them for another 5000km or so and sold the truck.

For what it's worth I'm running Interco Trxus MT's yer round, on/offroad and DD.  I'm really happy with them.  They're like the Swampers in that they have alternbating side lugs, but the tread is slightly less aggressive and has tons of siping for icy roads. They are NOT an AT they are a good MT.  I heard Interco wears too fast but I figure how fast could they possibly wear on our little trucks?  After all each tire is rated for over 2000lbs and our entire trucks are under 3000 lol.
(FOR SALE, drop me a line) '01 Vitara 2.0, 2" suspension lift, 2" body lift, 31x10.5x15 Interco TRXUS MT's on ford truck turbine rims, 1" wheel spacers, manual hubs, 5125 gears (Sidekick rear and GV steel front). DD/bushmobile "Snowflake"

I think I'm still going to explore these Traxions a bit more.  The idea of a 30" tall, 7" wide 'pizza cutter' tire with good teeth intrigues me, especially running them on stock 5.5" wide steel wheels.
