2002 4cyl Tracker - high idle?
« on: February 17, 2012, 09:30:52 AM »
2002 Tracker with the 2.0L 4 cylinder and 5 speed stick.  110,xxx miles.  Runs good otherwise.

Kentucky hasn't had a horrible winter this year but it has been sub freezing at times.  Last year was my first with it and it was colder/snowier/saltier/crappier.  Anyway, seems like this season since we hit the cold temps it's been idling high when cold.  Now, I know it should do that but this is 2000rpm or so.  It does idle down after warm up but 2000rpm?  Granted I have been parking outside at night a lot more frequently than instead of my warm garage this winter but still...2000rpm?

For the life of me I can't specifically recall how it did last year but this seems abnormal to me so I suspect it wasn't idling high like that.

No check engine lights or anything.  Runs just fine, starts right up, and when warm will happily burble along at 700 or so rpm while sitting at a light even in freezing temps.

These have the old wax pellet issue like the original 8V Trackers and Kicks did?  Somehow I doubt it.

i live in new-brunswick canada, its really cold and mine revs at the same wen cold, around 2000rpm. it is normal, it is set this way so it warms up the engine faster so it can run at his maximum performance quicker. i know the 2000rpm on a cold motor sounds bad specially with the thickness of the oil and cold piston rings.... but i see it this way. at 2000rpm, the oil is getting thinner more quickly so less wear on start up and heat up more quickly to the normal tempature. at a lower rpm would take more time to heat up the oil witch will wear out a bit more on start up as the oil would stay thicker for longer

i often change my oil more often in winter, they suggest changing oil every 6000km (dont know in mille sorry) but i change it every 5000km as the oil would be thinner than at 6000km,

AJM, FWIW, I thought about your post this morning when I cranked Buster over (with frost on the windshield).  When he came to life I watched the tach.  Yep... he fast idled right at 2000 RPM for about a minute or two, then came down to around 700-750RPMs and off we went.  So, I guess 2 grand is normal for cold weather starts on the 2 liter engines.  I hadn't consciencely took note of the actual RPMs before, but I always listen when he cranks and starts.  Nothing unusual.
'02 Chezuki Tracker with a 2 Liter and 5spd.  It works for me!!!

Only thing that's made me notice was it was doing it fairly consistently lately, even on the not-so-winter-like days we've been having.  Did it one day at 40 some degrees fairly recently.

However this morning when it was 40 something all night (thunderstorms) it fired right up and idled at 1200 or so. :P
