Economical Option to a winch
« on: April 30, 2004, 05:29:41 AM »
I wanted an opinon on what I could use for self recovery of my sidekick.  I would like a winch but don't really have the money right now.  Is there a cheaper option that really works?

But if you have a winch, you can wheel alone.I don't like going it alone, but none of my wheeling buddies go elk hunting.

heh, I was just about to suggest a come-along. Seems to be a fairly popular self extraction tool around here, with all the rednecks who don't spend any money on their rigs :)

Hi-Lift has a setup that turns your jack into a sort of come-along. Not all that expesive as I recall. Anybody who sells the jack should have the recovery kit.

their is a really old trick.  tie a rope onto the rear rim.  try to get it under the tire some how and drive in revese(sp).  the rope will wrap arond the tire and pull you out.  thats a super getto trick.  also a Hi lift jiack can be used a a come-a-long

Before I got any 4-wheeling stuff, I always carried a block & tackle along (double duty for Elk hunting).

Of course, a tow strap can really come in handy, too.

Hi-Lift, it'll do more than a come-a-long. Around $50.00 at Northern Hydraulics.

Yes, and also the brake hose and cv joint. Likely you'll have nearly no brakes and a ruined cv joint, also. I saw that "trick" posted in 4 wheel parts wholesalers mag a while back, looked pretty scary to me.

Well you missed the post I saw about the drive shaft
and wrapping a strap around it to pull you out  :o

I think these are last resort tactics, not to be used
as an everyday unstuck option, keep an open mind,
some of these might be of some use someday, but
not everyday.

To start out get a HighLift jack, short piece of chain, 2 shackles and a long strap. A come along may be helpful but with the other items you'll be able to get out of most things.

I didn't have the $$ for a winch either so for now I mounted a donated 6000lb little winch in the back. With it in the back it sure is helpful and it's out of the weather.
