Gas Tank Blues :(
« on: February 21, 2012, 06:48:05 AM »
well im not too impressed with my zuki so far, most of the parts i call for are dealer items only, witch makes parts expencive. i just changed my oil pan 2 weekends ago and now need to change my gas tank as the skid plate had hold up moisture and rusted it right in the middle were is the middle drain hole of the skid plate, i cant find a way to patch it and its a dealer item only. really there is no way im gona patch it as were its leaking it has a good 3 inch in diameter that has a very soft spot.

i notice the gas tank has like useless gas tank strap, seems to hold nothing and just there to hold crap to make the tank rust faster. i am thinking of cutting them off. and for the skid plate i would really like to get it completely off but as i do alot of off road driving with it i will have to find a way to get it to hold less crap in it, such as maybe do a couple of slots, drill alot of 1/4 inch holes or just cut the bottom out and drop in a mesh grill with 2 or 3 braces.

i got a 2002 vitara with the 2.0L. is the xl-7 and grand vitara would fit also? i know the older traker and sunrunner has a smaller tank but if it fits i would put one in lol. if it wernt for my oil pan 2 weeks ago id be putting on a new tank for sure.

well i had more bad new today, i cant find a used tank anywere in canada or southern us from my auto part dealer ans salvage yard, i have called the local chevrolet dealer and they want 1100$ + tax for a gas tank if the suv been built in the us and 1400$ if its made in mexico. and that is a dry tank, no sending unit, vent.....

i found a good tank with everything included for a 75$ but its a 4 hour+ drive from home. but i may have no choice driving to get it. sucks bad in my case

Have you tried www.car-part.com ?

I found a BUNCH all over the US from 50-200 bucks. And I'm sure the salvage yards would ship.

The sealant works if you prep the tank properly - it's actually an aviation maintenance product that has perhaps transitioned into the automotive market, and I'm sure you don't need me to tell you of the concern with which "peeling" sealant would be viewed in that industry.

I have a tank here that was done several years back, and have had no problems with the sealant peeling.

well after a 2 week of searching at local junkyards (they buy tanks from Southern usa) and called the dealership at suzuki and chevrolet, i could not have a tank for it. the chevrolet dealer said i had to pay a 1400$canadian and they will put my name on a list, wen they have enough people on the list they will do a batch of tanks, i din't like the sound of that, i called suzuki and bacicaly the same story, i need to pay 580$ and its back ordered and i caould have it tomorow or in a year so i have decided to patch it

i have patched the rusted spot with "jb weld" , the tank was rubberized coated from factory, the gas has penetrated under the rubber coating and allowed me to peel off sum of the rubber coating away, i have pealed the most i could (about a 2-3 inches diameter) it had a rust spot the size of a quarter and bare metal around it without rust, so i took 40 grit sand paper and sanded it very well, cleaned it off and let it air dry an hour, then i have applied a coat of the jb weld and waited a 10 hours then appyed another coat and went to sleep, the next morning it was very hard, but i wanted to make sure so i have added the rest of the tube i had on top of it and spred it even wider to cover the whole bare metal then sprayed on rubberized unpaintable undercoat on the whole tank.

been 2 weeks on the patch up job and now i dont know what to do with the skid plate. i hate to put it back on as that was the main cause for my leak (crap build up and rusted it) and i hate to not put it on has it will not be protected wile backing up in the woods. i am thinking o cuting sum 1-2 inches wide strip and weld in sum mesh grill so the crap can get out of the plate and would be cleanable with a pressure washer.

FWIW:  spray some rubberized undercoating (from a rattle can) onto your gas tank... let it set up well, give it another coat then slap your skid plate back on and drive him.  It took 10 years for the crap to accumulate and eventually cause a small rust hole.  In another ten years you probably won't be driving your truck anymore.  You'll have another vehicle by then.  Even if you are, you probably won't have the rusting gas tank issue.

Or... spray some rubberized undercoating on your tank, slap the skid back on it and drive it.  Then look for a new or newer gas tank for less bucks to put on it later on.  Like.... take a trip south of the border... for vacation.... and find one and have it installed while you are on vacation.... south of the border.  It isn't your fault if you have gas tank problems while you are on vacation.

Nothing lasts forever.  It's simply a reminder to us that we don't either.
