i dream of removable doors
« on: March 08, 2012, 07:52:14 AM »
i would really like to have removable doors for my vitara as i do not have a/c in it and it would make it cooler for the summer, and i would like to get mud everywere ;)

wonder if anybody tackle this before or seen a site sumwere of how to build this? i need it to be strong as i am driving it on the road, if it werent for that id just unbolt the doors off. i was thinking of the same deal as a jeep tj/yj/cj... just pipes and a pin but im afraid the sheet metal on the vitara would not be strong enough for it. also i have a 4 door vitara as well.

I've always liked the idea of going door less. Here's a video of a guy with a first gen 4 door going without:

crawling a boulder at Niagra Rim Trail.

I used to take the doors off my Samurai, but i was always worried about getting hassled by the cops. I could see it being even sketchier in my Vitara. It doesn't take an idiot to know that second gen trackers were never meant to go doorless.

bring on the aftermarket tube door!!!

thanks for the video, thats the look im going for, i see alot of jeeps tjs without doors around here and never got caught. but i never seen anybody else without door on any other vehicle around either. i am thinking of those doors made of piping. i found a buddy that is seling his mig welder so i am starting this project after having a welder

Up here in BC it's definitely illegal. The only vehicles where it's legal are ones that could be ordered without doors, such as old CJ's.

Plenty of people talk about getting pulled over for other violations and not hearing anything about their lack of door. I guess it depends on the cop and whether you're running no doors, tube door or half doors.

Has anyone ever thought about modifying the rear door? taking out the glass and lowering the edge would sure make the truck feel more open. i guess you'd loose your spare tire mount though.  ???

i do not know the laws here on your other end in new-brunswick  :P,would be cool to have a rear glass like the 4 runners, press a buttn and it lower down.

maybe that's what i'll do this summer.

Find a rear door from a wrecker, smash the glass out, cut the whole thing just above the spare tire carrier.  8)

Removing the back glass is a bad idea.  If you drive around with the side windows up and no back glass carbon monoxide from the exhaust can make their way into the vehicle.  So if you remove the back glass just be aware of this.

very good point.

I imagined my modified rear door only being put to use during high summer when all the other windows are open all the time.

I'd build some half doors out of tubing that utilize stock hinges and striker plate. Just put a cable with a little pull lever like a hood latch lever and use that as the "handle" then you could slap some cheap little mirrors on there and it would be more than legal. Just my opinion. I don't own a vitara but I would like to see how you do this.

that would be great, but unbolting a door to swap it takes too much time, specially with a 4door. i took a look at it earlier today and i think i can make it work, looks alot like the older sidekicks and trackers, but will need to swap both hinges witch i think is the lower ones or the top ones i dont remember (put driver side on passenger an passenger on driver side) if this swap works it will save me time, all i need to do is  cut a piece off to allow the door to slide off the pins, but once the piece is cut off it will probably need reinforcement so the little tabs were the pins are and will be welded so it wont bend.this is were i can see an issue as it would need reinforcement under the pin and could maybe disturb the bottom hole for the hige to bolt on the vitara frame.

im lucky to have a junked vitara to try this out, if i can make it work i can just swap it on my good vitara.

Yea I just got done reading your other thread, what a deal! Maybe you can find a way to convert your stock doors to run the same hinges as the tube doors and use pins to slide in and lock the door on then when you want to switch you can just pull the pins and swap then re insert the pins. You'd probably just have to make this yourself but it could work

thats is exactly what i wanted to do, it will work exactly the same as a jeep tj or similar, i might try it today for fun as we have wicked warm weather for this time of year, the snow have melted a good feet or more over night

my vitara is my daily driver, so i dont want to screw up with it much, just looking for a removal door mod so wen i get at my girl friend grandfathers place i can get the doors off and then hit the trails from there, i dont think its legal here to drive without doors, and tube could solve that but i am cheap on this at the moment ;) we just bought a puppy last saturday (english pitbull/boxer mix) now i need to stop this project t'ill the dog learns his name and obeys a bit more. since now we have the dog we are not going to remove the doors wen he gona be around for safety :)
