bouncing idle
« on: March 21, 2012, 11:27:57 AM »
Seems more people hit this section than the others so ill ask my question here.
basically my 97 1.8L sidekick 158,000 miles has a bouncing idle.

Asked in other section this is what I got so far
 http://www.zukiworld.com/forum/suzuki-sidekick-vitara-geo-tracker-(gen-1-platform)-1989-1998/wont-maintain-steady-idle/
I unplugged my MAP sensor this morning and drove it about 20 miles it seemed to idle and run a little better so does this mean a new map will cure my idle problem.
Thanks

Unlikely to be the MAP sensor but you should check it as per the FSM. Check all round for air leaks on the intake side and any cracks or leaks on the exhaust manifold. A new O2 sensor may be a good investment if it hasn't been changed for a while. If you can get hold of a scan tool then that should give you a clue or two.

Ses light finally came on this morning. Popped the reader on and it said 6 codes :(
Scan tool is basic read and erase unit.
P1408,P301,P302 P1408,P301,P302
why did it give the same codes twice? I know 301,302 are misfires in cylinder 1&2 but 1408 is MDP circuit. What's MDP?

swapped out the MAP sensor its still surging when i stop and it feels like its missing (it is missing it gave a miss code this morning) between 2000-3000 rpm.
when it warms up it runs a bit better.
i raised the idle so it wouldnt stall when i put it in reverse(doesnt always work)

dont know if it matters but when i have radio, headlights and heater blower on the revs bounce also.

misfire....
the 1.8 has individual coils for each cylinder, similar to the 2.0. they sit right on top of the spark plug hole, mounted to the valve cover. i have heard they tend to go bad frequently. i would turn my attention to that next.
as far as the code repeating......
the self diagnostics (CEL) codes will continue to repeat the codes the computer has stored untill you turn off the ignition switch.
