Is a weber carb worth it?
« on: March 31, 2012, 12:34:56 PM »
My 88 Samurai came with a weber carb so I have no comparison of what it was before.  Is there really a significant difference on and off road with the weber?

I also have an 88 with a Webber, but am having a hard time getting people to reply to my thread about it...

I've had an 88 with a stock carb and one with the Webber...neither had A/C or Heat, both run like champions.  I get 27-33mpg with the Webber carb, got 23-25 with the stock carb.

In a nushell...

On the road, the Weber has substantially better acceleration and top end than the smaller, stock carb.  Offroad, the stock carb performs better on steep angles.

The stock carb, when it is relatively new, will run great for a long time.  However, once it starts have problems, they can be very hard to diagnose and fix.  The Weber is not as trouble free as the stock carb, but it is very simple and easy to work on.

I have run a Weber for 9 years and stock for 2 years before that.

The Weber offers, overall, more performance than the complicated old Hitachi. I am not so sure of the efficiency of the Weber, though.   I can't recall ever getting much better than 24MPG from mine.  Maybe I am a bit careless with the skinny pedal...

If you are in the market for a new aftermarket carb, you might want to check out the Side-draft conversion kit sold by Zuks Offroad.  It has the advantage of good mileage, better offroad reliabiliy than the Weber (no shut-downs on steep grades) AND someone to go to for service after the sale.

I hope that this helps.

I've read some good things about the Harley Myside.  Awesome acceleration and extreme angle running.  I do not have any personal experience with it though, nor have I seen it installed on any other Samurai.  They do seem to cost about twice the price of the Weber kits.  The other things that have made me hesistant to purchase one are 1) no choke and 2) apparent topping out around 60mph on the highway due to not enough airflow.  Again, those are just things I've read.

The key to obtaining good MPG with the Weber is to jet it correctly and then try to put your foot into it so much.   ;)  Which can be hard to resist, since it does provide more power than the stock carb.  When I ran a Weber with an otherwise stock Samurai, I would get 26-28 MPG.

I know there has been pro/cons on a fuel pres. regulator.
But the facts are that with the Weber Installation instructions, it says TO GET ONE.
when I did my Weber Conv., I also installed a GOOD electric Fuel Pump, a fuel pres. reg. and put a fuel pres. gauge
at the carb inbound fitting so you can SEE what pressure you are running.

I have a 4.9 T-Case, 31's and getting 16-20 mpg's

you can get jets from www,cbpeformance.com if you cant find them local . Its best to adjust your jetting with a fuel / air ratio gauge than you know what you have and aren't guessing .
