Family Vaca in MOAB/Grand Canyon this summer
« on: April 09, 2012, 04:27:30 PM »
As a family vaca we'll be heading out to MOAB/Grand Canyon area for 10 days of fun in the sun this June.  What are some of the must things to do or not to do?  We are somewhat novice when it comes to riding out there.  Ive ridden Colorado 3 times in an atv, and twice in my RZR 4 and all over Texes, Ok., and Arkansas so we know how to ride mntnous areas but not MOAB.

Im not bringing the Zuk out, its just too far to tow it but I will be bringing my RZR 4 (much lighter and easier to handle).  Its set up to run all over, and had no probs out in Colorado the last 2 summers, but the terrain around MOAB looks totally different.  Also, while out there we'd like to go over and see that little hole in the ground, the Grand Canyon any recommendations where to stay or ride out of there.

Ive talked w/the Bar 10 ranch and am considering that place, whats ya'lls opinion on that as well.   Thanks in advance, Billy

Saw more Rzrs at Moab this year.  Stay on trail/roads arnd you can't ride them in N.Parks.
The North rim opens in mid May, so I haven't been that way.,   We spent a couple days at the South rim.  Woke up to a couple inches snow.
Enjoy the trip.

Moab - Hell's Revenge, Poison Spider, or Moab Rim, in that order, if I were to suggest trails for a Razor. Each one will return to the start area. You could leave your tow rig and trailer. ;)

Each one is different and in different parts of town. If you have 2 days for Moab, I'd do Hell's Revenge and Fins and Things while in Sand Flats park. Then you can decide on which other trail. Poison Spider is Awesome without being too much. Moab Rim is pretty aggressive at the beginning. Just remember while on Moab Rim, you are always going Uphill and it's easy to forget about the weight pitching over when side-hilling.

If you are going to see sights in Moab, I'd go to Arches NP and hike to Delicate Arch! NOT the Overlook, Hike TO the Arch. It's about an hour of walking uphill, but it is easily WORTH IT!

Another quick sight in Moab, Dead Horse Point. Quick park to run thru, but Very Beautiful Overlook! WORTH IT TOO!

As for the Grand Canyon, I have been told more than once to go to the North Rim. I did and it is AWESOME! The North Rim is more wooded and like Colorado. Go directly to the Lodge and watch the Sunrise or Sunset, whatever time you get there.

I have not been to the South Rim, but I've heard it is more commercial. Fast Food, Souveniers, Helicopter rides and whatnot.

The North Rim is Quiet, Very Scenic, and very wooded. You can stay in Lake Jacob, AZ. They have some cabins a small cafe and a gas station. From Jacob to the Lodge is all of 50 miles. If you are going to catch a Sunrise plan on leaving at least an hour to hour and a half for time to get there. It will be worth it.

May I suggest a route from Moab to Grand Canyon? I'd take the interstate west, then south thru Bryce Canyon NP and Zion NP. Both very neat parks.

Have Fun! Take Pics!

zuksofhazzard covered it.  Hell's Revenge (saw ATV's doing it), Poison Spider (you can continue on through Golden Spike & Gold Rim trails), Moab Rim (there are no bypasses, and remember what goes up must come down same route).

We bypassed Zion NP, and have been told it was worth seeing.  Arches, Canyonlands (Islands in the Sky district), Canyonlands (Needles district), Bryce Canyon, and Escalante, are all leading up to the GRAND CANYON.  My wife thought it was perfect with each NP being just a little different as we went South and then the ultimate Grand Canyon being so huge.  If planning on staying in Jacobs Lake, or Grand Canyon try to make your reservations, because you don't stay without one.  You can camp outside the NP's in the National Forests usually, 1/4 mile from highway.
BLM and National Forests around Moab have campgrounds, some open camping areas (usually way out of the way).  You can reserve some of the camp spots, and others are first come.  They were very helpful when we were there, check with them.  The fines are very big for just camping where you feel (if it is a closed area).
Again
